A Polish priest said about the “Immaculate”: No respect for faith

The promotion of the latest horror film starring Sydney Sweeney has finally come to Poland. The campaign, intended to shock, is controversial among religious people all over the world. Fr. commented on the production. Rafa³ G³ówczyñski, who is known in social media as the “Priest from the estate”. He stated that the production was outrageous and said how church institutions should fight against this type of films. He thinks lawsuits are a bad idea.

A horror film that has already shocked conservatives around the world will soon be released in Polish cinemas. In “The Immaculata”, the title character goes to an Italian monastery, which makes her feel anxious from the very beginning. It soon turns out that Sister Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney) has become pregnant, which the doctor calls an immaculate conception. Other nuns start talking about a miracle, and the main character begins to suspect that she has been chosen to fulfill a mission that will be disastrous for her.

“Immaculata” is outrageous, and the film promotes itself. Also in Poland

So far, the film has been more controversial due to its unusual promotion than its content. There is an aggressive campaign on social media consisting of recordings featuring the main actress reading aloud drastic passages from the Bible. Moreover, in the USA it was possible to obtain promotional materials in the form of pregnancy tests with a cross, and tickets to pre-premiere screenings could be purchased for $6.66, during which women appeared dressed as nuns covering their faces with red cloth.

This caused the “Immaculate” to be talked about loudly, and the American faithful described the production as sacrilegious. The film’s distributor in our country also decided to ensure an original atmosphere during a special screening of the film. The Multikino Warszawa Złote Tarasy, where the pre-premiere took place, featured, among others, the confessional was covered with promotional materials, and many people came to the event in costumes inspired by the clothing of Catholic Church clergy.

“The Neighborhood Priest” referred to the new film with Sydney Sweeney. “This is absurd”

The editorial team of the portal decided to talk to Fr. Rafał Główczyński on ways to promote production. The priest is popular on social media as “The Priest from the Estate”, and he belongs to the order of Salvatorian priests and is a vicar in one of the parishes near Warsaw.

It is always painful for a believer when important symbols are used without respect and to gain publicity. This film and its promotion are a very sad example of this. A pregnancy test in the form of a cross is absurd.

The priest was also asked whether the Catholic Church should react when this type of campaign appears in public space. – Yes, but probably not in the form of official letters and demands for apologies or lawsuits, because it would make the creators even more happy and the film would get free promotion. In my opinion, a better way is simply for believers to express their feelings among themselves.

However, in contemporary cinema, creators increasingly use religious motifs and create films that can always arouse negative feelings in someone. Fr. Rafał Główczyński also said how the Catholic Church should respond to genre cinema inspired by the dogmas of the Catholic faith.

In my opinion, it is wise not to give such productions free advertising through lawsuits, and on the other hand, ask the question what happened to make people treat faith and symbols so disrespectfully. Such films would not be made if people did not want to watch them, the priest concluded.
