Signs prohibiting walking dogs on lawns can be found in many housing estates. Are they legal? We explain whether the housing community has the right to enforce compliance with this prohibition.

Green areas play a very important role in housing estates. Lawns, squares and green areas are not only an element of landscape architecture. They help with water retention, lower temperature and have a positive effect on well-being. We can often see a sign on the lawn that says “Entry prohibited”. What are the penalties for failing to comply?

Plaques are most often placed by estate managers or the administration of residential buildings. Many pet owners comply with the ban and do not take their dogs to a given square or , but as it turns out, such a sign is not legal.

In a conversation with attorney Klaudia Podgórna-Starszyk, she explained that There is no legal basis on which housing communities could prohibit walking animals in a specific place. – The appearance of this type of sign in the housing estate should be treated more as an expression of a request from the housing community (cooperative) addressed to the owners of pets not to take their pets here. (…) The housing community (cooperative) will not have any legal instruments to enforce this type of “ban” – she said.

Can a dog enter private property? The law is clear on this matter

The situation is different with private areas. In this case, the property owner has the right to prohibit animals from entering their property, and pet owners must comply with the prohibition. Let’s also remember that if we take our dog out on a public lawn, we are obliged to clean up after it. Otherwise we may be fined up to PLN 500what he’s talking about.
