Jadwiga Barañska played with Gustaw Holoubek. But that’s not the only thing that connects her and his son

Jan Holoubek is currently one of the most appreciated Polish directors, and Jadwiga Barañska is an actress whom millions of readers loved (or loved to hate) for her portrayal of Barbara Niechcic in “Nights and Days”. What do they have in common?

The shooting period of “Nights and Days” lasted over 400 days, and the budget was colossal for those times – it amounted to PLN 130 million. A four-hour cinematic film and an eight-hour television series about the fate of the Niechcic family were made. Both Jadwiga Barańska, whose husband Jerzy Antczak was behind the camera, and Jerzy Bińczycki played timelessly and phenomenally. They were both appreciated at the film festival in Gdynia, she also received, among others: Silver Bear for best actress in Berlin.

It was thanks to Gustaw Holoubek that Jerzy Antczak made “Nights and Days”

The Barańska-Antczak film couple reached for Maria Dąbrowska’s prose, apparently thanks to Gustaw Holoubek. – He read this book wonderfully on the radio. I liked it very much because this book contains many timeless thoughts. I pointed out to my husband, which happened to me once, that it would be good if he were interested in it. Not only because I would like to play this role, but I knew that the whole thing was worth attention. It turned out that I was right and I found a role for myself – recalled the actress years later, talking to “Fakt”.

Gustaw Holoubek and Jadwiga Barańska collaborated with each other more than once in the Television Theater. They became such friends that the film’s Barbara Niechcic was asked by him and Magdalena Zawadzka to baptize their son Jan. The godfather was actor Stefan Friedmann. A few months ago, Jerzy Antczak shared a photo from that event on Facebook.

The director maintains constant contact with his fans via social media. He also spares no words of appreciation and love for his wife. “Dear Jadzia, you have worked your life beautifully for family and art. Today, on your birthday, we ask God to keep you with us for many years! With love – Jerzy and Mikołaj” – he wrote on behalf of himself and his son in October last year. His wife also sometimes uses his account. On Antczak’s profile, in September, after the great success of “Doppelganger” at the Gdynia film festival, the actress was happy about her godson’s win.

Dear friends, in recent days I have experienced two great joys. The first one was when Janek Holoubek, the brilliant son of Magda and Gustaw, and my godson, won the award for directing, and the second one was when your tenderness and prayers allowed me to walk a dozen or so steps.

– she wrote. Jan Holoubek also has, among others, four Eagles (for the series “Wielka Woda” and “Rojst” and two for the film “25 Years of Innocence. The Case of Tomek Komenda”).

Barańska, who also played, among others, the title role in her husband’s film “Countess Cosel” and wrote film scripts for “The Lady of the Camellias” and “Chopin. The Desire for Love”, she has been struggling with various health problems for some time. Last August, Jerzy Antczak announced that she had suffered a hip fracture, but due to her age she could not undergo surgery.

On January 30 this year, he wrote that the actress had serious vision problems and had to start treatment at an ophthalmological institute in Los Angeles. “Today Jadzia was in the hospital for examination of the condition of her eyes. The hip fracture healed itself to such an extent that she was able to walk to the car on her own, which is extremely encouraging,” he informed on Facebook. “Unfortunately, the condition of both eyes is dramatic,” he wrote, adding that doctors are trying to save the actress from losing her sight. In an interview with Plejada he commented:

Jadzia is not a hysterical person, but she told me: Life without sight makes no sense. It’s better to leave.

In 1978, Barańska and her husband emigrated to the United States. In the early 1990s they returned to Poland, but after some time they decided to move to the USA again. They have been together since the beginning of her professional path, they met for the first time in the second half of the 1950s, when Barańska was applying to theater school. – If you want to climb, someone has to hold the ladder for you. I held his ladder and he held mine, the actress said in one of her interviews about their years together.
