For people who regularly come to church, the sight of a priest with a donation tray circulating among the faithful during mass is not surprising. Some believers, however, may be surprised by something else. Namely, there are certain rules about how we should make an offering in church. As Fakt.pl writes, they can be found in a book published in 1919 entitled “Social customs adopted in the more important circumstances of life.” And although we live in completely different times, many of them may still be important in the eyes of Catholics.
It is worth remembering, however, that 105 years have passed since the book was published. The rules applicable to parishioners are no longer as strict as they used to be, but there will certainly be a group of people who are still familiar with the old customs. So how can we put money into the tray while maintaining the principles of “church savoir-vivre”?
How to put money in the tray? There is an important rule
Fakt.pl quotes a sentence in which the issue of the amount that is best to donate to the parish during mass is discussed. According to the author of the book, we should not show off how generously we give to the church. The next one concerns specific behavior when making a sacrifice.
It is indecent to throw money into a tray from high, as if by this you wanted to show that the offering is significant and splendid.
– quotes Fakt.pl. The author of the book explains that you should gently place the donated money on the tray and then move away from the person collecting it. According to the author, it is inappropriate to start a conversation with her. Even if we know her well.
(…) A bow from the man or a friendly sign of greeting from the woman is sufficient. The stopping of an entire group of young people at the gathering table, often practiced in Warsaw, deserves to be condemned as inappropriate and inappropriate.
– advises the author.
These are not all the interesting threads that can be found in the mentioned publication. The book also describes in detail how the faithful should look and behave during mass. Today we would say that 10 years ago there was a strict “dress code” in church. The outfit had to be elegant. Women dressed in black. They chose outfits that revealed only their faces and hands. Men, on the other hand, were recommended to wear tailcoats.
