The National Broadcasting Council will not punish TV Republika for Pietrzak’s words. “Parable, satire”

TV Republika will not be punished for the words of satirist Jan Pietrzak, which were spoken on December 31 last year. Pietrzak then “joked” about immigrants and talked about ready-made barracks for them – modeled on German camps.

If you are a satirist and appear on TV Republika, you can use any comparisons you want – you will not face any penalty from the National Broadcasting Council. This was confirmed by the words of Maciej Świrski, chairman of the National Council, who stated that in his opinion TV Republika would not be punished and the satirist’s statement was taken out of context.

The head of the National Broadcasting Council on the fine for TV Republika and Jan Pietrzak

Maciej Świrski, in a Monday interview on Trójka, was asked about the situation of TV Republika. The TV channel has had several failures since the end of 2023, which caused some advertisers to withdraw. They did not want to be associated with racist and hateful comments made on this station. There were also complaints to the National Broadcasting Council, but as Maciej Świrski claims, at least for Jan Pietrzak’s “jokes” there will be no penalty:

A satirist has the right to say whatever he likes, there is freedom of speech in the country – said Świrski in a conversation with Renata Grochal. – This sentence was taken out of context, it was a satire showing the duplicity of the government, which first says one thing, then does another, and then there is the Brussels context. Don’t worry, there is no wrongdoing here.

Pietrzak used a certain parabola here and that’s it. The context of this statement was the comment that the Germans were keeping immigrants in the Dachau camp. I’m not saying whether it’s true or not, I’m giving context. The fact that Pietrzak did not know this is a separate matter.

So there will be no penalty? – Renata Grochal asked.

I said it wouldn’t.

What exactly did Jan Pietrzak say? A satirist on Republika TV said that there is a place for immigrants in Poland, because after World War II we still have “barracks built by Germans” in the country:

I have a cruel joke with these immigrants that they count on Poles being prepared because we have barracks. We have barracks for immigrants: in Auschwitz, Majdanek, Treblinka, Stutthof. We have a lot of barracks built here by the Germans. And there we will be (…) these immigrants, forced onto us illegally by the Germans, because the people who escape to a better world are not illegal. The authorities that let them in are illegal, i.e. the Germans are illegal. Their slogan welcoming the newcomers was illegal, outside the treaty, and inconsistent with any laws. This is illegal German activity. We should be sensitive to this in the coming year, because it seems that they are starting to get to our heads a lot – said Pietrzak on TV Republika.

Jan Pietrzak graduated from the Faculty of Sociology, and during the PiS government he was a regular commentator of current political events on TVP. After the change of power, he became involved with TV Republika.
