The musical about Tamara £empicka premiered on Broadway. Even the New York Times recommends it

The musical about the life of Polish artist Tamara £empicka debuted on Broadway. Critics of “The New York Times” write about the importance of the painter in the history of depicting women in art.

Tamara Łempicka is a painter of Polish origin and one of the most important representatives of the art deco movement. Trying to reconstruct the artist’s life is not the easiest thing, because, just like in art, Łempicka did not shy away from self-creation when talking about her past. Most likely, Łempicka even forged her birth certificate, which listed Warsaw as her place of birth – not Moscow.

In 2018, the musical “Lempicka” based on the life of the Polish painter, directed by Rachel Chavkin, had its premiere at the Williamstown Theater Festival. Four years later, the production went to the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. On April 14, 2024, the musical premiered on Broadway at the Longacre Theater.

“An impressive musical portrait of a woman who changed art and culture forever. It covers decades of political and personal turmoil in the artist’s life, told in a gripping score steeped in pop culture. ‘Lempicka’ boldly explores the contradictions of a world in crisis, a woman ahead of her time and an artist, “whose time has finally come,” we read the announcement on the musical’s website. The show is recommended to viewers by critics of the New York Times.

“There’s not much historical truth here.”

After the premiere of the play, its first reviews already appeared. “Only when Łempicka finds her muse and lover Rafaela, the artist discovers her destiny, and the musical comes to life,” writes Frank Rizzo from Variety and praises the second act of the musical. In turn, Jesse Green from the New York Times emphasizes that the play successfully convinces the viewer of the importance of Lempicka in the history of depicting women in art.

“The fact that we have little historical truth here is not a problem,” writes the journalist, who notes many fictitious scenes that could have influenced the reception of the artist. However, he highlights the vocals in the musical, which he says are top notch.
