Last Thursday, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, organized a press conference during which he announced the dismissal of the heads of several important institutions subordinated to the ministry. Among others, the current director of the Polish Film Institute, Radosław Śmigulski, resigned from his job.
I don’t want to talk about formal issues, although they were quite important. There was unreliable accounting of funds. Only after pressure from the Supreme Audit Office did we recover PLN 7 million, Sienkiewicz said at a press conference.

At this moment, he will be replaced by lawyer Kamila Dorbach, who previously cooperated with the Polish Film Institute, but also, among others, with the Polish Theater in Warsaw. The minister also announced a competition for this position, which is to take place “as soon as possible.”
Śmigulski’s dismissal caused an avalanche of comments on the Internet, which indicate that many people from the film industry felt relief. Director Kinga Dębska has a similar opinion and commented on this matter for Onet. In the past, she was vice-chairman of the PISF Council for several years.

“The director believed that melodrama was the same as romantic comedy”
– It wasn’t the director’s money, and many times you could get the impression that he thought so. Mr. Śmigulski had a basic rule: to promote films that he could show at foreign festivals. He wanted to promote himself, without regard to the needs of the Polish audience, she added.
The creator of films such as “My Cow Daughters” and “Plan B” also revealed that Śmigulski rejected many of her projects. – For example, the Polish-Japanese project failed because the director believed that melodrama was the same as romantic comedy. I hope that today a difficult stage of censorship and self-censorship has ended for Polish cinema. From the beginning, I had the feeling that the director didn’t want to listen to me or talk to me. And I know I wasn’t the only one, she added.
