Alimony is a topic that arouses great emotions. It’s no secret that some people have a huge problem paying for their own children. However, it turns out that in some places courts may impose maintenance obligations on animals. This case recently became loud in the Spanish media.
A Spanish court awarded dog maintenance
Cats and dogs are increasingly treated as family members. It is therefore not surprising that after breakups there is often a problem of who will stay with the pet. It turns out that a person who takes care of a pet can apply for financial support from a former partner in court. This also happened to some former spouses from Spain. Their divorce case dragged on for several years. Ultimately, the court decided that the woman would take care of the two children and the dog.

However, this is not the most interesting thing about this case. As reported by the daily “La Vanguardia”, the court decided that the dog, which remains in the woman’s care, is entitled to alimony. Therefore, a man who earns more is obliged to financially support not only his children, but also the dog. For children, the amount will be 150 euros per month, and for a dog – 40 euros.
Can we receive animal alimony from our ex-spouse in Poland?
Currently, under Polish law, it is not possible to grant direct animal maintenance. This is because it is not formally a member of the family. However, even in our country, the end of a marriage does not necessarily mean that the cost of living falls only on one person. maintaining a pet usually “fits into the scope of the justified needs of the person entitled to maintenance”. The court may therefore agree to this type of demand.
