Owning a car is not only about the pleasures of easy transportation. Drivers also have several responsibilities, including: liability insurance fee. Unlike AC, it is not voluntary. Failure to do so may result in a high penalty.

Civil liability insurance is commonly referred to as third party liability insurance. It protects the driver against financial consequences resulting from possible damage caused while driving the vehicle. If you cause an accident, the costs of repairing the damaged car will be covered by your third party liability insurance. It is mandatory, so continuity is important. Third party liability insurance must be purchased once a year.

How to check if your car has third party liability insurance? Ask UFG for help

Third party liability insurance protects both parties involved in an accident, which is why it is so important. The injured party receives financial compensation for the damage caused, and the perpetrator does not have to pay for it, because the compensation is paid by the insurer. On the website of the Insurance Guarantee Fund you can check whether a given vehicle has a valid third party liability insurance policy. Just provide the registration number or VIN of the car.

It may happen that the perpetrator of the accident does not have valid third party liability insurance. Unfortunately, there are many such situations. – In 2023, there were almost 350,000 cases when a vehicle had a break in protection – said UFG spokesman Damian ZiÄ…ber in an interview with the portal. Someone may be just a few days late with a payment, but the consequences will be severe.

An additional liability fee is imposed on the owner, the amount of which depends on how long the vehicle has not had third party liability insurance. The rates are indexed every year based on the minimum gross amount. In 2024, the additional fee is PLN 8,480 for a break of more than 14 days, PLN 4,240 for a break of 4 to 14 days and PLN 1,700 for a break of 1 to 3 days. The maximum penalty for lack of third party liability insurance is PLN 8,600. UFG will always find out whether you have valid insurance, even if the car is parked unused in the garage. The institution has the so-called virtual policeman. It is a system that collects data from insurers on an ongoing basis about each third party liability insurance policy concluded. Then it compares them with the database of registered vehicles in the Central Vehicle Register. Thanks to this, every day without valid third party liability insurance is visible. Remember that your policy does not automatically renew when you buy a used car. When the third party liability insurance period ends, you must arrange for new insurance yourself.
