It has been 30 years since the death of Kurt Cobain. The singer and one of the founders of Nirvana was only 27 years old. What were the last days of his life like?

On April 5, 1994, he orphaned his almost two-year-old daughter and made Courtney Love a widow. The singer became another musician, . The last month of his life was a fight against himself, addiction, his own demons and fame he never dared to dream of.

Kurt Cobain was in the middle of a tour just a month before his death

In early March 1994, Nirvana was on their European tour. They had been performing for a month, moving from city to city, from Spain, through France, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia and Germany. This was the peak of their popularity. In Europe, the group’s 1992 performance was still lively, right after the release of “Nevermind”, subsequent concerts sold out immediately. However, not everything went according to plan. The concert in Munich on March 1 was Nirvana’s last one. Three days later, in Rome, his wife found Kurt Cobain in his hotel room.

He overdosed on pills, drank them with alcohol, and even left a suicide note. The musician was taken to hospital, where his life was saved. He returned to the United States, where, at the urging of Courtney Love, he checked into rehab on March 30 – the situation in Rome showed him that he would not be able to cope with addiction on his own, which is what he had hoped for. That day was the last time he saw his wife and daughter.

The last escape

Rehab was supposed to be his last chance. My wife threatened to leave. Friends from the band that Nirvana will break up if Cobain continues his addiction. However, coercion had the opposite effect. Kurt checked himself into a California clinic, but less than two days later he jumped a fence and ran away. Love didn’t have time to block his access to the money, he bought a plane ticket to Seattle and disappeared there.

The police later managed to trace more or less what the musician had been doing in the days before his death. It is known that he bought a shotgun under a different name – his weapon was previously confiscated by the police after Courtney Love signaled that the accident in Rome could have been a suicide attempt. He was still seen walking and in the park, but on April 3 he disappeared completely. The wife even hired a private detective to find out Kurt’s whereabouts. The disappearance was reported to the police, the musician’s family home was checked – but not the garage and greenhouse.

Kurt Cobain took more than one life

Kurt Cobain’s death occurred on April 5. The body was discovered by an electrician on April 8. He believed Cobain was asleep, but then he noticed blood near his ear. There was no longer a face by which one could recognize one of the most recognizable people of that time. A box with heroin administration accessories, cigarettes and a suicide note were found next to the body.

Cobain’s death caused a real suicidological alert not only in the United States, but around the world. Researchers already knew that the death of such a popular person could result in a wave of successors. The concerns were justified, because Cobain’s letter itself could speak to people in mental crisis. Its content was analyzed in millions of ways, conspiracy theories abounded, and the words “better to burn than to smolder slowly” may have reached too many people. Scientists know of at least one life that ended as a result of imitating a musician.

Fortunately, neither in terms of numbers nor in terms of the way they took their lives. The reasons were pointed to the responsibility of the then media – no one romanticized the musician’s death. The manner of death also did not encourage potential imitators. In the following days of mourning, doctors and services themselves were more sensitive to all signals from people in crisis and their relatives – this attention alone resulted in the year-on-year number of suicide deaths in April being even lower in some countries.

in which he saw “too much of himself”. When she grew up, the musician’s daughter struggled with addictions, which her father struggled with. Ultimately, she became an ambassador for people who also found themselves on the same path that Cobain and later her followed. But the void left by such a loss is hard to fill. Frances managed to recover from addictions. On her thirtieth birthday, she allowed herself to summarize the last ten years of her life:

20-year-old Frances wasn’t sure what would happen to her. At the time, I was filled with self-loathing, insecurities, destructive behaviors that I copied from others, and more trauma than my brain or body could handle. I saw the world this way, through the lens of grief and anger, that I was brought into it at all, that there was so much chaos, pain and sadness in my life that I couldn’t escape from – she wrote on social media.
