Mary Shelley created the character of Frankenstein in 1818, but her book remains an inspiration for modern creators to this day. The universal novel, which contains numerous psychological, philosophical and even feminist issues, gave rise to a series of visual interpretations. The most famous one is “Frankenstein” by James Whale from 1931, in which Boris Karloff played the iconic role of the monster.

Although in Shelley’s book, Dr. Frankenstein goes against the monster’s will at the last minute and does not create a partner for him, in the film versions the creature actually appears on screen. After the success of “Frankenstein”, Whale decided to make a sequel. In 1935, “The Bride of Frankenstein” was created with Elsa Lanchester in the title role.
Over the years, Frankenstein’s monster has been played by Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”, “Mank”, “And Then There Were None”), Christopher Lee (“The Lord of the Rings”, “Star Wars”), Robert De Niro, and in the The record-breaking popularity of the theater play was played by Benedict Cumberbatch alternately with Johnny Lee Miller. The film will be directed by actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, who in 2021 created the drama “Daughter”, which was nominated for an Oscar three times. The cast of “The Bride” includes the actor who played Batman in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy – Christian Bale, who will play Frankenstein, and Jessie Buckley, who will play the titular fiancée. In addition, the production will feature Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Annette Bening.
The first photos from the set have already appeared on the Internet, in which we see the two main characters in the film’s make-up. Christian Bale, in addition to the characteristic stitching on his skin, has tattoos and a fashionable hairstyle. Jessie Buckley, on the other hand, has blonde curly hair, light-dyed eyebrows and dark drawn lips. They both seem much less exaggerated than their 1930s versions, which gives them an air of authenticity.
Most of those commenting on the new interpretations of iconic characters welcomed them with enthusiasm. However, there were many who noticed that the next hero was “modernized” by making him look like Jared Leto’s Joker.
