Pruning garden hydrangea – when to do it?

Garden hydrangea is the apple of many gardeners’ eyes. Every season it produces beautiful, dense and lush flowers of various colors. And the best thing is that we can admire them for many months, because even when they start to wither in autumn, they look really beautiful. Of course, there will be many flowers provided that we take proper care of the plant. The position, substrate and regular watering are important, but you must not forget about working with pruners.

It is best to prune garden hydrangeas in early spring. March and April are a good time to do this. Garden hydrangea produces flowers on last year’s shoots, so we do not need to prune it heavily. We basically focus on removing dead, diseased and frozen shoots. If we are not sure about any of the twigs, it is better to wait until May. Then we can easily determine whether the shoot will produce flowers or not. We prune hydrangea above the first pair of buds. We place the pruner at an angle to minimize the risk of water accumulating, e.g. from rain on the so-called wounds. Otherwise, the plant may be attacked by fungal diseases.
