Ewa Milde was born on March 7, 1944 in Skierniewice. Her father was a Polish army officer and Home Army soldier, Eugeniusz Milde. This meant that she was raised in the spirit of patriotism from childhood. She was an actress by profession. In 1967, she graduated from the Acting Department of the State Film, Television and Theater School in Łódź, and later made her debut at the Theater of the Łódź Land. Then she was associated with the Baltic Theater in Koszalin. Milde died on July 24, 2020 in Chicago, USA. She was known to Polish audiences, among others, for her roles as Winnicka in “Alternatives 4”, Zofia in “Miś” and Bożena in “Czterdziestolatek”. She also appeared in the production of “Oh my God, nothing happened”, “Alone for Yourself” and “Wooden Rosary”. The woman showed enormous talent, and even her small roles, seemingly contributing little to the plot, could not be ignored. This led to her being talked about as a minor champion.
Ewa Milde loved to play. Despite this, she decided to leave Poland
– I was offered roles, but they were mostly cameos, some so small that my name was omitted from the credits. For me, the company I appeared on the screen with was more important than the size of the role. I had the great fortune to play alongside the most outstanding Polish actresses and actors – confessed Ewa Milde in one of the interviews. she appeared not only on television and in films, but also on the stage. When she was the wife of director Maciej Prus, and even after the divorce, she took part in his plays.
However, Ewa Milde did not pursue acting throughout her life. After several iconic roles, she disappeared from the screens and few people knew what happened to her. It all happened during martial law, when she decided to start working on the radio. She left Poland in the late 1980s, initially to Sweden. “A little for adventure, a little for bread”, talking about the move in one of the interviews. After arriving in Sweden, she quickly realized that working in advertising or in film would not bring her much income. Instead, Milde agreed to go to the USA, to Chicago, at the suggestion of the owner of the Polish radio station, Walter Kotaba.
All because of a favorable offer of earning money while hosting a program, which was supposed to be the beginning of a new, better life for the actress and a way to repair the budget. Initially, she planned to return to Poland when she earned money. However, this did not happen, and it was all because of love. – In Poland, I lived the myth of America, where you could earn more in a week than in a month in the theater. I hoped that I would recover financially and come back. And here life has shown that nothing is simple. I was supposed to spend a few weeks there, but I stayed forever, she confessed.
The actress never returned to her homeland. She stayed in the US because of love
Her plans to return to Poland changed dramatically when she met Bogdan Łańko, with whom she decided to get involved. She married him for the second time. On a daily basis, the couple edited and hosted the program “Program Na Serio”. Over time, Milde and her husband also helped to create the “Bocian” cabaret, and they also ran the Proscenium Theater Group. The actress was associated with the radio program for 30 years, and in the meantime she also directed. During all this time, due to her fear of flying, she no longer visited Poland, although she planned to visit Poland at the end of her life.
However, it was supposed to take place through… Alaska and Siberia, and one of the types of transport was to be a dog sled. However, the adventure never took place. – She divided her heart between Poland and America. She missed her homeland incredibly, lived every day with events in the country, and suffered from the unpleasant situations that were developing there. And she couldn’t go because she was terribly afraid of flying, her friend, the poet Beata Mamok, confessed after the actress’ death. – We decided that we would go to Alaska, rent a dog sled there and cross the frozen Bering Strait, and then take a train through Russia to Warsaw. The idea was waiting to be implemented.
Ewa Milde had been sick for years, but no information was given to the media about what was wrong with her. It was also not stated whether the disease was the cause of her death. The actress died in Chicago at the age of 76 and was buried in the parish cemetery in Umiastów, Poland. Her husband announced the actress’s death. In 2020, Milde was posthumously awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
