Due to the multitude of duties and holiday preparations, it often turns out that we are left with a lot of excess food. Some of the Easter delicacies end up in garbage bins later. It is worth remembering that freezing is a great way to preserve food, extend its shelf life and enjoy the taste of dishes that we did not eat during the holidays. The ones we can safely put in the freezer include:
- rye soup (without additives)
- white borscht,
- white sausage (raw, before steaming),
- leftover meats,
- bread,
- cakes without cream additions (cheesecakes, poppy seed cakes and babka cakes).
What should not be frozen? Easter dishes that are better not to put in the freezer
Not all dishes that we have left over after Easter can be frozen. Although eggs dominate the table and are the basis of most dishes, they are not suitable for storing in the freezer. We can freeze only raw egg whites or yolks. the egg white contains a large amount of water, which, when exposed to low temperatures, makes the egg watery and rubbery. In addition, the following are not suitable for freezing:
- mayonnaise and all dishes containing it. This product separates during the freezing and thawing process,
- pickled cucumbers, onions start to crack when exposed to cold,
- cakes with whipped cream or custard cream,
- dishes with gelatin,
- foods rich in potato starch,
- horseradish.
Remember, if you cannot share the excess with your loved ones, check if there is a soup kitchen in your area. It is a separate place with a communal fridge and cupboard, where everyone can share food with anyone for free. All within foodsharing.
