Polish comedy in the top of the world Netflix ranking. That’s not the first time

As early as November 2021, the website was launched, with the rankings of the 10 most popular productions in the world every Tuesday. publishes lists for both its original projects and licensed movies. They have been divided into various categories: we can check lists for English-language films, as well as series and entertainment programs. And as the platform has more and more local productions, there are also lists of non-English-language movies, series and shows. On top of that, there are also separate rankings for over 90 countries with the Daily Top10 and lists of the most popular series and shows (in a language other than English) of all time. Seats are awarded based on the total number of hours watched by the selected title.

A Polish comedy at the forefront of the Netflix world ranking

The rankings on the site are open to everyone, and the data goes back to June 28, 2021. New lists appear every week, and as it turns out, Polish filmmakers have something to be happy about: as it turns out, from December 6 to 12, the comedy “David and the Elves” was watched in various parts of the world for so long that the production was ranked third in the global list of the most popular non-English language movies. The official counter shows that viewers so far have spent 9,110,000 hours with this story.

Audiences in 24 countries were particularly interested in Polish film. In the Americas, “David and the Elves” was seen in countries such as: Bahamas, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. In Europe, the comedy enjoyed popularity not only in Poland: it also attracted viewers from Austria, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Romania and Switzerland. In addition, our comedy was watched more intensively in Reunion, Cyprus and Lebanon. Moreover, “Dawid i elfy” took second place in TOP10 in Malta, and in Germany he was fourth.

The action of the film begins before Christmas. It was then that 11-year-old Dawid (Cyprian Grabowski) moved with his parents to a big city, which was a difficult experience for him. But then something extraordinary happens – the boy meets a real elf – Albert (played by Jakub Zając, who became known to the audience as a young Zenek Martyniuk in the movie “Zenek”). Dawid learns that a newly met friend has escaped from the land of Santa Claus, because he wants to find out where the magic of Christmas really comes from. Before the heroes, an adventurous trip to the Tatra Mountains, where David’s grandparents live, awaits.

Of course, this story could not be without Santa Claus himself! He is played by Cezary Żak, known to Polish viewers from the series “Ranch”. The film cast also includes: Anna Smołowik, Michał Czernecki, Monika Krzywkowska and Piotr Rogucki.

Not only “David and the Elves” on Netflix’s global charts

Recently, the film “In the forest today no one will sleep 2”, to which viewers devoted 2,660,000 of their lives, also enjoyed the interest of international audiences. At the turn of October and November, production remained in the third place in the world ranking for two weeks. The Polish slasher was watched by viewers from 31 countries, such as: Bahamas, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Honduras, Martinique, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy , Poland, Spain, Mauritius, Réunion, as well as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Maldives, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Vietnam.

Interestingly, before the sequel’s premiere, the first part also hit the world rankings – between 25 and 21 October it was in sixth place thanks to the fact that it was watched for 1,900,000 hours.

Another example of a film that broke through to the global top is also “Bartkowiak” with Józef Pawłowski in the lead role. This is the story of a disqualified MMA fighter whose brother lost his life in an accident. After the tragedy, he takes control of the family’s nightclub. He soon begins to understand that his brother did not die by accident.

“Bartkowiak” appeared on the global list of TOP 10 non-English language films three times: in fifth place in the week of July 26-1.08.2021, in the sixth place on August 2-08, 2021, and after three weeks (August 23-29, 2021) he returned to ninth. The film appeared in rankings in 51 countries, incl. in: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Jamaica, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Kenya, Turkey, Oman, Qatar, Arabia Saudi or New Caledonia. In total, the users of the platform spent 4,570,000 hours with this title.

The Polish criminal comedy “W jak morderstwo”, starring Ania Smołowik and Paweł Domagała, also did quite well. The film was ranked fourth in the global TOP10 list of non-English language films thanks to the fact that viewers watched it 6,520,000 hours, and it was especially liked in 22 countries such as: Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela, Croatia, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Turkey and the Maldives.

Earlier, the global Netflix ranking also included such titles as “Prime Time” with Bartosz Bielenia, the comedies “How to become a star” and “Miłość na squared” or “Hejter” directed by Jan Komasa, which already a week after its foreign premiere on Netflix on lists in countries such as: Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Brazil, Mexico, Taiwan, Kenya, Nigeria and Turkey.

Netflix emphasizes that it is planning further investments in both Polish original productions and expanding its library of licensed titles. Łukasz Kłuskiewicz, responsible for acquiring local content for Netflix in Central and Eastern Europe, told us:

We are happy that thanks to Netflix, Polish films can “travel” around the world, arouse emotions and provide entertainment, and their quality is appreciated by international audiences. We will continue to invest in titles from the Vistula River – both original and licensed ones, in order to constantly expand the library of great films, offer Netflix fans an increasing selection, and give Polish authors and creators the opportunity to present their artistic visions on the international arena.
