The fortnight Bilintxen Menda will claim, from April 19 to May 2, the historical importance of San Sebastián as a “square of bertsolaritza.” The focus of these days, coordinated by Xabier Euzkitze, will be the bertsolaris championships, and for this a total of four activities have been organized.

The program will offer the performance of three champion bertsolaris and one champion on April 19 at the Sala Imanol Larzabal (Lugaritz). As the organizers have recalled, “among the five living bertsolaris who have ever won the Absolute Bertsolaris Championship, only Xabier Amuriza has stopped performing in public.” Thus, the four champions who are still active will sing in San Sebastián: Sebastian Lizaso, Andoni Egaña, Amets Artzallus and Maialen Lujanbio

Likewise, on April 24 at Ernest Lluch KE, Jon Sarasua will give a conference in which he will talk about the “championships-bertsolaris binomial”, in an event presented by Xabier Euzkitze.

On April 28, the Teatro Principal will host the show ‘Sung anthology of the bertsolaris championships’. Through “the voices and looks” of the bertsolaris Beñat Gaztelumendi, Oihana Iguaran, Unai Agirre, Nerea Ibarzabal and Aner Euzkitze a journey is made through the main bertsolaris championships held between 1935 and 1967.

Accompanied by the musicians Gari Otamendi and Ixak Arruti, they will offer “a game of mirrors in which the present is contrasted with the vision and the bertsos sung in the past.”

Furthermore, on May 2, the San Telmo Museum will reflect on the ‘Evolution of the theme in bertsolaritza’ in a round table in which three people from three different generations, Joxemari Iriondo, Laxaro Azkune and Maite Berriozabal, will talk about the themes and approaches of each era.
