It cleansed and protected – a bush with unique powers
Supernatural powers have been attributed to this plant for years. For the Slavs, it was a unique shrub that had to be treated with due respect. It was also an extremely important element of many rituals (e.g. weddings). For the Romans, in turn, it was supposed to be a kind of protection against poisonous animals.
However, juniper gained its fame not only in this part of the world. Its spiritual properties were also appreciated in Middle Eastern countries. It was there that its twigs were burned, believing that the smoke escaping from the plant would cleanse the room of all evil. To this day, juniper branches and fruits are used in magic – especially protective magic.
Chase away bad luck and misfortune from home. Take a few twigs and some string
In folk beliefs, in order to get rid of all evil from the house and almost literally “sweep away” this unwanted, negative energy – one had to make a broom. It is a magical element that is still present in some homes today. It is extremely simple to make and takes very little time.

Just collect a few birch twigs (which symbolize, among other things, fertility and abundance), and then put juniper branches between them. The whole thing should be tied with string. The broom made in this way can be used in two ways:
- Place the resulting bunch of twigs on the windowsill or near the entrance door. This method is intended to prevent bad energy, charms, curses and poverty from entering the apartment. In turn, it is supposed to attract abundance, goodness and positive energy.
- With the resulting broom, we can literally sweep all the rooms in the house with the intention of throwing away evil and unwanted energy. Importantly, when sweeping, remember to take care of every corner of the apartment, as it has a strong symbolic meaning. The used broom should then be burned. This ritual is worth performing especially during spring – and is associated with the well-known and symbolic “spring cleaning”.
