Another prestigious award for the Polish artist. The world-wide award-winning director Małgorzata Szumowska received the prestigious FIPRESCI Platinum award. And soon her latest film, which competed for the Golden Lion at last year’s festival in Venice, will be released in Polish cinemas.

Małgorzata Szumowska is one of the most outstanding Polish women in the world of contemporary cinema. On March 16, the director received the prestigious special award of the International Federation of Film Critics FIPRESCI Platinum at the 28th International Film Festival in Sofia. She was awarded for lifetime achievement.

Szumowska also met the audience during the festival and cinema lovers during the FIPRESCI Masterclass at the Polish Institute in Sofia. Her latest film “Woman from…”, which she co-created with Michał Englert, was nominated for the Venice Golden Lion at last year’s festival.

“The story of Aniela Wesoły. She led an ordinary life – growing up in a small town, work, love, wedding, family. However, she could never fully be herself – Aniela was born in a male body. What choices will she make? Will she be ready to sacrifice everything to be able to live normally and without fear?” – we read in the video description.

– This is a very important film for us, the result of many years of work and countless meetings with transgender people of various ages who have been living in Poland for decades and have trusted us implicitly to tell their stories – this is what the filmmakers said a year ago in an interview for “Gazeta Wyborcza” .

The director has won 34 awards out of 50 nominations. In 2018, she won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale for the film “Face”, and her previous film “Body” was awarded for best director. In turn, in 2013, she received a statuette in the “best film dedicated to gays and lesbians” category for the production “In the Name of…”.

“The Woman from…” will debut in Polish cinemas on April 5. The film was shot in many locations, including: in Warsaw, Kłodzko, Zabrze, Bystrzyca Kłodzka, Wambierzyce, Bardo, Polanica-Zdrój, Długopol-Zdrój, Lądek-Zdrój and Nowa Ruda. The cast included Joanna Kulig, Małgorzata Hajewska-Krzysztofik, Mateusz Więcławek, Bogumiła Bajor, Jerzy Bończak and Anna Tomaszewska.
