Do you have your old ID at home? Don’t throw it away, it will still be useful! You can gain a lot

Most of us usually get rid of old documents – such as ID cards or passports. It turns out, however, that this is not always the right step. Some old, expired documents can be very helpful. They will be useful, among other things, in confirming work experience.

An ID card is a basic document in our country that allows you to confirm your identity. It contains data such as: name(s), surname, date and place of birth, PESEL number and document number and series. Every adult Polish citizen is obliged to have a valid identity document.

What to do when your ID expires?

Currently, an ID card is only valid for ten years. This is because documents of this type must be updated from time to time. An ID whose validity period has already expired is not valid. For this reason we should not use it. In such cases, the replacement of the ID card must be requested no later than 30 days before the document’s expiry date. To obtain a new one, we must apply to the commune office competent for our place of residence. Importantly, using an invalid ID card may result in a financial penalty of up to PLN 5,000. zlotys. The replacement does not involve any costs other than those related to the need to take new photos for the document.

From 2021, offices will issue a new ID card with fingerprints. This results from Regulation 2019/1157 of the European Parliament and of the EU Council of 20 June 2019. This means that both fingerprints and signature must be left at the office. Therefore, it is no longer possible to apply for a new document electronically.

Do you have such an ID card at home? You better not throw it away

Most of us usually get rid of old documents – such as ID cards or passports. Before throwing them away, we must remember to destroy them so that our data is not visible. However, it turns out that this is not always the right step. For example, old ID cards (green) may be useful when determining the right to a pension.

Such old ID cards can be used as a document to confirm work experience when determining the right to a pension. You will find information about the years of work and the amount of contributions paid. This is especially important for people who do not have other documents that could do this. It is worth adding that in such situations a health booklet may also be useful.
