Maria Maj is one of the most popular Polish theater, television and film actresses. He owes his greatest popularity and recognition among viewers to his roles in series such as “Roads of Freedom” or “M jak miłość”. Although not much is known about her private life, many interesting films could be created based on some of her stories. What was her childhood like?
For 14 years she thought her father was another man. The truth came to light by accident
Maria Maj was born on December 14, 1948 and was raised by a single mother who worked as a nurse. She never hid the fact that her father was a taboo topic in her home, her relatives didn’t want to talk about him, and she didn’t feel the need to ask questions. She focused on development and willingly traveled around Poland, admiring her theater idols on stages. One day she went with a friend to Wrocław, where she visited her godfather. He accidentally revealed to her a secret that had been hidden for years. – Did you know that your father lives here? – his words in “Wysokie Obcasy”. It was then that she learned that her father was a certain Józef Dąbrowski, and not, as she had previously thought, the man her mother married when she was on the threshold of adulthood.
Shocked by the information, she decided that she would not discuss this topic at home and would try to find it on her own. She finally managed to contact his old friend, but she had bad news for her, saying that the man had moved to the capital. It is true that she gave her his new address, but warned her that “he was not a good person” and it was not worth wasting her time on him. However, this did not discourage her. First, she planned to visit him, but she was afraid of his reaction because she was not sure if he knew about her existence, so she decided to send him a letter. He wrote back immediately, asking for a meeting, which finally took place in the summer of 1962.
Maria Maj reveals her mother’s love adventures. That’s why she didn’t know the truth about her biological father for years
When her mother found out about her secret meeting with her father, she was not happy. Then she decided to tell her daughter the painful story of her not very successful life. It turned out that Jan Maj, whom Maria considered her father for 14 years, was under family pressure even before the war. She wasn’t happy with him so she decided to leave. – She ran away from him (…) at the age of 19, to Warsaw – she recalled. However, the war caught up with her there and she was sent to work in Wiesbaden, Germany. Then she fell head over heels in love with a man from the United States who encouraged her to emigrate overseas. Although she loved him without memory, she was afraid of the reaction of her loved ones and ultimately did not decide to take this step, abandoning her great love.
After the war, she still kept in touch with her beloved’s friend, officer Józef Dąbrowski, whom she also met in the labor camp. After returning to their homeland, they corresponded for a long time until she finally went to visit him in Lower Silesia and they became a couple. It was from this union that Maria was born, but she did not receive her surname from her biological father, but from a man who was still formally her mother’s husband. This relationship also did not stand the test of time, because the woman still loved the American. After 2 years, she left Dąbrowski and went to Łódź, where she settled permanently and raised her daughter alone.
