Replacing panties and bras regularly seems obvious, but many people still do it too rarely. For some people it happens even once every three years. Experts give a specific number of washes, after which you should throw away the underwear and buy new ones. Did you know about this?

According to , the survey in which over 2,700 people took part showed that 47 percent men and 66 percent do not replace their underwear for two to three years, and another 13 percent men and 4 percent women do it even less often. According to some, underwear should be replaced with new ones once a year, others claim that damage and visible traces of use are a clear signal for this. What do the experts say?

How soon should you throw away old panties and buy new ones?

According to Dr. Shirin Lakhani, all underwear that we wear regularly should be replaced once a year. In turn, gynecologist Narendra Pisal advises using the 50-wash rule. After so many washes, the underwear should be replaced with new ones. – When you throw away your underwear depends on how many pairs you actually have, she notes. The idea is that while one person may wear and wash the same five pairs of panties in rotation, another person may have many more, which means they wear out slower.

I would say a maximum of 50 washes per pair of cotton underwear

– she emphasized on independent.co.uk.

Replacing underwear every 50 washes? “I wonder who does that?”

And what does it really look like in everyday life? – This is absurd! I wonder who does that… When I simply pay attention to the condition of the underwear. I don’t see the need to replace it if it looks good and there’s nothing wrong with it. It would be a waste of money for me, says Gosia.

– I bet hardly anyone follows this. I think most of us, including me, buy new underwear when the ones we currently wear are worn out. And if you buy a good quality one and wash it properly, it can last for a really long time – says Marta.

From time to time, it’s a good idea to devote a few moments to this and thoroughly inspect your underwear to see if it really needs replacing. We say no to exposed underwires, torn seams, holes and stretched elastic bands. When shopping, it is worth paying attention to the material from which the item is made – the better quality, natural materials (e.g. cotton, viscose, silk) will not only be better for the body, but also (if properly cared for) will last longer.
