The past year in cinema has shown that viewers crave new things. Movies such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” turned out to be cinema hits. In turn, financial disappointment – franchise productions such as several Marvel films or the latest “Flash”, which was supposed to ensure ticket sales thanks to fans of Michael Keaton as Batman. He didn’t provide.
“The Raven” with a bloody trailer. Instead of Brandon Lee, Bill Skarsgård
It turns out more and more often that relying on the nostalgia of today’s 30-year-olds is no longer effective. Nevertheless, on June 6, we will see a new version of the cult “The Raven” from the 1990s. The creators faced an extremely difficult task, because the legend and importance of the production was even more emphasized in the minds of the viewers by the tragic death of Brandon Lee, who played the title character.
In the new “The Raven”, Lee was replaced by Bill Skarsgård, who has apparently become the first choice of filmmakers when looking for a dark, disturbing and often crazy character for their works. In 2017, the actor played Pennywise in the remake of “It”, based on the book by Stephan King, and will also appear as Count Orlok in the new version of “Nosferatu”.
New Raven like Jared Leto in Joker. Can this work?
The trailer of the new “The Raven” has already appeared on the Internet and has divided fans of the original. The title character’s appearance is closer to Jared Leto’s Joker than to the gothic Brandon Lee. Skarsgård seems to be less lost in his portrayal, even more aggressive, determined, determined and therefore one-dimensional. However, the viewer’s curiosity is aroused by a fragment of Raven’s transformation, which looks really promising in the trailer.
There were also changes in the aesthetics of the film. The creators focused on modernizing both the main character and his surroundings, and also followed the trends of creating comic book films. “The Raven” has lost its fairy-tale and dreamlike character. In the trailer we see a thoroughly brutal and realistic production. This method of narration was proposed to viewers by Christopher Nolan when he made the groundbreaking film “The Dark Knight” about Batman in 2008. Today, the style is one of the most popular trends in adapting comic book stories.
Fans of the 1994 film were also very concerned about the creators’ approach to the soundtrack in the new adaptation of James O’Barr’s comic book. The soundtrack to the old “Kruk” is as iconic as the film itself. It includes dark rock hits by The Cure, Rage Against the Machine, Pantera and Nine Inch Nails, perfectly matched to the atmosphere of the production.
Long before the trailer for “The Raven” with Skarsgård appeared online, there were rumors that huge changes were planned here as well. The modernization of the image was also supposed to be associated with focusing on music news, and rap dominates the charts. The creators are apparently aware of the attachment of “The Raven” fans to its soundtrack, which is not only a complement, but also a unity with Alex Proyas’ film.
When choosing a new musical theme for the contemporary “The Raven”, the filmmakers made a compromise. In the trailer we hear a song by Post Malone, who combined the rock and rap legends on his album “Hollywood’s Bleeding”. In the song “Take What You Want”, which is played in the film’s trailer, we hear Ozzy Osbourne, a heavy metal giant, and Travis Scott – one of the most popular contemporary rappers. Here, autotune meets a pure guitar solo, which emphasizes the creators’ intention in approaching the project.
