Why are cucumbers packed in foil? The reason is very important and it is not about freshness

There is a lot of talk about ecology, which is why many people wonder why, since we avoid excess plastic so much, cucumbers are packed in foil, while other vegetables can be bought loose. Where did this idea come from? The reason turns out to be surprising.

Fresh is useful not only for a sandwich. We use it to make salads and cucumber soup for dinner. Next to tomatoes, it is one of the most frequently purchased vegetables. However, in the store we can choose from cucumbers packed in foil or outdoor cucumbers. Why are the former wrapped in plastic? Few people know the reason.

Why are cucumbers packed in foil? This type of packaging plays a specific role

Interestingly, not all greenhouse cucumbers are wrapped in foil. This only applies to those imported from abroad. Polish products can be purchased without additional plastic. Why? Well, it turns out that the foil has a protective function.

If the cucumbers were not wrapped in foil, they would lose their properties and, above all, they would not remain fresh and crispy. The product packed in this way has an extended shelf life of up to two weeks. Cucumbers consist mainly of water, which evaporates, and the foil is intended to prevent this. Otherwise, the cucumbers would be wilted and soft.

There is another reason why cucumbers are packaged this way. These vegetables are extremely sensitive to ethylene, which is released by fruits such as bananas, and pears. In transport, these products are often transported, and this makes them they will ripen faster and spoil faster. The foil is intended to protect the cucumbers from this process. However, before we put them in the basket, it is worth checking their freshness. To do this, simply press the ends of the vegetable. If they are soft, it is better to put them back, as this is a sign that the cucumber may be spoiled or even moldy.
