In April this year, “The Immaculate” directed by Michael Mohan will appear in cinemas. The script for this “extreme” – according to the creators – horror film lay in a drawer for almost 18 years before it reached Sydney Sweeney. The 26-year-old actress chose Andrew Lobel’s design over many others, although her decision was not accidental. The film was to be made for the first time in 2015. Sweeney then auditioned for the role of the main character, but that was where the creators’ grand plans ended.
Sydney Sweeney returned to “Immaculate” after almost 10 years
After many years, Sydney Sweeney, this time as an actress and producer, decided to give the project another chance. Michael Mohan, with whom the star has previously collaborated on three other productions (“Everything Sucks!”, “When Nobody’s Watching”), confirmed in an interview with Variety that the actress had been planning to make a horror film for a long time: “Sydney was shooting the second season of ‘Euphoria’ and all her fans were like, ‘You’ve got to make a horror movie.’ She wanted to get into production too, so they read every script in town, trying to find something. And she said, ‘You know what? The best horror script I’ve ever read was the one I auditioned for. I wonder if I can bring it back to life.”
While making “The Immaculate”, Michael Mohan was inspired by cinema classics: “Rosemary’s Baby”, “Don’t Look Now” and “The Exorcist”. “Even though the stories are told in an elegant and classic way, it has a sense of danger,” he said in an interview.
The director also wanted the darkness omnipresent in the film to contrast with the pleasant feeling of excitement. Although recent research shows that Gen Z is no longer as interested in watching sex on screen, Mohan was not about to give up on sensuality: “We used to make films that were sexy and turned people on, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s an element, which is missing from our current cinematic landscape and which we absolutely need.”
“The Immaculata” tells the story of a pious nun, Cecilia, who comes to an Italian convent. Shortly thereafter, it turns out that the young nun is pregnant, and the doctor confirms that there has been an immaculate conception.
