Christopher Nolan took a big risk and negotiated an unusual deal with the studio regarding his profits from “Oppenheimer”. The decision turned out to be extremely profitable. The filmmaker earned a record amount of money.

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony is behind us. The biggest winner of the gala was “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan, which was nominated in as many as 13 categories. The filmmakers left the ceremony with seven statuettes – for the best film, leading actor, supporting actor, director, original music, cinematography and editing.

The first statuette was received by Christopher Nolan, previously nominated for “Dunkirk”, “Inception” and “Memento”. – Academy, films are just over 100 years old. We don’t know where this incredible cinematic journey will take us, but knowing that you think I am a significant part of it is extremely important to me – said the director, accepting the Oscar.

The Academy’s appreciation and the prestige of the statuettes awarded to “Oppenheimer” are the icing on the cake of the successful production. Christopher Nolan can also enjoy a huge financial profit related to the premiere of the work. Even before “Oppenheimer” hit theaters, the director signed a very advantageous, but also risky contract with Universal Pictures.

How much did Christopher Nolan earn from “Oppenheimer”?

The filmmaker gave up the high fee and chose the income from the first ticket sold and negotiated 15 percent of the profits with the studio. Usually, the director receives a fixed amount for the film, and earns money from tickets only when the cost of its production is recovered.

A favorable contract and great interest in the film have meant that Christopher Nolan has so far earned as much as $85 million from “Oppenheimer”. The amount comes from ticket sales and distribution agreements with streaming platforms that have already been concluded for the coming years. Forbes notes that the amount earned by Nolan was reduced by remuneration for film agents and lawyers and ultimately amounted to $72 million.

“Oppenheimer” in Poland can be seen in selected cinemas and via streaming. The film is available for rent or purchase on Prime Video, Canal Plus Premieres, TV Smart, Apple TV and Rakuten TV.
