Collagen, collagen is not equal. It is better to choose the one whose ingredients have been confirmed in clinical trials

“What does collagen do in your body?”, “Collagen as natural support”, “Collagen for wrinkles, for cellulite” – these are just a few examples of slogans that you have certainly come across in beauty magazines and websites. Its popularity is growing, but many people still do not fully understand the role of collagen. What is collagen and which one to choose? Beef, fish? We give you a hint.

What is drinking collagen?

Collagen is the main structural protein in the extracellular matrix, which is found in various connective tissues of the body (for example, cartilage, bones, tendons, ligaments and skin). It constitutes 30 percent. total protein in the body. It is also found in the cornea, blood vessels, intestines, intervertebral discs and dentin in teeth. Collagen tissues can be stiff, as in bones, or flexible, as in cartilage. It all depends on the degree of mineralization. Let’s remember that it is necessary for: joints, bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, skin, hair, nails and let’s find out whether it is worth supplementing it.

Does collagen work?

Collagen is an important component of our body. We already know this, but do collagen preparations work? To answer this question correctly, you need to understand how it works.

An important concept that we need to know is collagen hydrolysis. It involves the breakdown of this protein molecules into smaller fragments – collagen peptides. This happens in an aquatic environment. Both collagen and collagen peptides formed in the hydrolysis process are absorbed in the small intestine. The degree of absorption is inversely proportional to the particle size. Many studies confirm the absorption of collagen peptides in the body. In one of them, the concentration of collagen-forming amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) in the plasma was measured after oral administration of collagen peptides resulting from enzymatic or non-enzymatic hydrolysis of collagen. The concentration of amino acids in plasma increases after administration of collagen peptides compared to placebo. A greater increase in the concentration of amino acids was observed as a result of administration of peptides resulting from enzymatic hydrolysis, which indicates better absorption of the products of this hydrolysis. [1].

Indirect evidence of absorption is the results of clinical trials of a given product. Studies have proven that VERISOL® collagen peptides reduce the volume of wrinkles around the eyes. The effect on reducing wrinkles proves that they must have been absorbed from the digestive tract [1]. But we will come back to the research.

Beef or fish?

A common question from people who would like to supplement collagen is which preparation to choose. Beef or fish – which type is the most effective? The best collagen is in the form of collagen peptides with research-proven effects. When choosing a supplement, we should primarily focus on clinical research. And there are no comparative studies showing the superiority of fish collagen over beef collagen or vice versa. Which one to choose should depend solely on our preferences – diet, allergies, etc.

Remember, hydrolyzed collagen does not retain the typology of original collagen. This typology is broken during the hydrolysis process. This is because if the protein is not hydrolyzed, it is not absorbed. In other words, type I or II collagen is not absorbable, but hydrolyzed collagen obtained from these two types is, although it does not retain the type I and II structure. VERISOL® contains hydrolyzed collagen peptides obtained from collagen types I and II, although this does not really matter because the peptide composition of collagen I and II is similar [2].

So what should you pay attention to when choosing a collagen supplement? We already know how important hydrolysis is. Collagen in its non-hydrolyzed form is absorbed less easily by the body compared to hydrolyzed collagen. Let’s also remember about the size of collagen molecules. Hydrolysis produces smaller peptides that are more soluble in water and have higher bioavailability compared to standard collagen. This means that hydrolyzed collagen is more easily absorbed in the small intestine and can be transported to the tissues that need it.

What also matters is how we eat. If we are on a vegetarian diet, we will choose fish. We may also simply like one of them and not the other. It is also worth checking whether the supplement you choose contains other key ingredients – for example vitamin C, which contributes to the absorption of collagen. But remember, what should be most important for us is testing the product we want to take.

The whole truth about VERISOL®

It is worth focusing on products that have ingredients confirmed in clinical trials. VERISOL® collagen peptides have been clinically tested to confirm their effectiveness in an amount as low as 2.5 g.

The most important criterion proving the high quality of the product used are clinical trials confirming the effects of its use. Currently, in medicine, the results of research based on EBM (Evidence Based Medicine) are considered to be reliable scientific evidence. The gold standard of EMB are randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. VERISOL® collagen, contained in REMÉ supplements, has such evidence of its effectiveness.

The first study involved over 60 women aged 35-55. The results speak for themselves. Skin elasticity improved significantly in the VERISOL® vs. placebo group after four and eight weeks. The positive effect of collagen on skin elasticity was visible for four weeks after the end of supplementation, which may suggest a long-term physiological effect. [3].

In the next stage, the effect of collagen on wrinkle reduction was analyzed. Over 100 women aged 45-65 consumed VERISOL® for eight weeks. During the four-week observation phase, a significant reduction in the volume of wrinkles around the eyes was observed in the VERISOL® group vs. placebo. Additionally, a significant increase in the biosynthesis of procollagen type I and elastin in the skin was noted [4].

The third round assessed the effect of VERISOL® on the degree of cellulite on the thighs in women with normal BMI < 25 i z nadwag± BMI > 25. Over 105 women aged 24-54 were divided into two subgroups (BMI <25 i >25). This time the study lasted six months. After this period, the visibility of cellulite on the thighs was reduced, and the effect was more pronounced in women with BMI ≤ 25. Additionally, specialists noticed a significant reduction in skin waviness (by 8% on average) on the thighs. after six months of VERISOL® supplementation vs. placebo. The density of the dermis also increased in the VERISOL® vs. placebo group [5].

The effect of VERISOL® collagen on the hair structure was also tested. 44 healthy women aged 39-75 took VERISOL®. After four months, an increase in hair thickness was observed, which is a key aspect of improving the structure and appearance of hair [6].

When checking the effect of the supplement on the appearance of the structure of brittle nails, the study involved 25 women aged 18-50 with brittle nail syndrome. The trial lasted six months plus a four-week follow-up period. What was noticed? Reducing the frequency of cracks and chips on nails, as well as the positive effect of VERISOL® on the speed of nail growth (12% increase after six months), the effect lasted for at least four weeks after the end of supplementation. 80 percent respondents noticed an improvement in the appearance of their nails and were satisfied with the effectiveness of the VERISOL® regimen, 75%. perceived their nails as stronger [7].
