The future of Wrocław’s neon lights hangs in the balance: “Time has passed”

The famous Neon Side Gallery may disappear from the map of Wrocław for good. All because of the ongoing dispute between the exhibition administrators and the City Hall.

Neon Side Gallery has been one of the main attractions in Wrocław for several years. It was created on the initiative of Tomasz Kosmalski, who came up with the idea of collecting old neon signs and placing them in one of the courtyards at 46 Ruska Street. However, there are many indications that the colorful exhibition will soon disappear from the map of Wrocław. All because of the conflict between its administrators and the City Hall that has been going on for several months.

Will Galeria Neon Side disappear from the map of Wrocław?

On Sunday, March 10, the administrators of Neon Side Gallery published an entry on social media, which shows that the talks with the city authorities that have been conducted for several months have not brought the expected results. In the post “Wrocław neons” we read: “We regret to inform you that the history of the neon gallery at Ruska Street is coming to an end. Talks with the Wrocław Commune lasting several months did not lead to an agreement ensuring the continued operation of this place. However, during this time we encountered a lack of reliability. and professionalism, and above all, with the frivolous treatment of this matter by officials.

According to the exhibition administrators, the City Hall did not perform the renovation work it was supposed to do. “Without them, the neon signs not only stop shining, but simply become more and more destroyed. That’s why we made a difficult, but in this situation the only possible decision and terminated the neon loan agreement. Time has passed,” the managers added.

The City Hall Press Office responded to the administrators’ announcement, stating that the neon signs displayed in the yard do not belong to the city. The town hall offered to carry out renovation works provided that the owners submitted a declaration that the installations would remain in the same place. “We are ready to carry out another necessary renovation, but by investing several hundred thousand zlotys of taxpayers’ money into these works, we want to make sure that the neon signs will remain in place. Unfortunately, the owner did not want to provide such a guarantee.”

The city also announced that, in accordance with the agreement, Galeria Neon Side will operate for another 12 months. However, the exhibition administrators did not agree with this information: “Currently, the Wrocław Commune is using neon signs without a contract, and the existing contract no longer binds the parties.”
