According to data from the Central Statistical Office, in recent years fewer and fewer couples have decided to get married in a church. For example, according to the Civil Registry Office in GdaĆsk, 1,062 civil weddings were recorded in 2023. 907 of them were concluded in the office and 155 outside it. In turn, there were only 376 concordat weddings – i.e. those in which the marriage is valid both under civil and canon law.
Don’t have religion on your certificate? You may have a problem with your wedding
For some people, however, a church wedding is still very important and they care about such a solution. It turns out, however, that not always a person baptized in the Catholic Church can receive it. In some cases, the obstacle may be the lack of… grades in religion. This is recalled by the statement of Father Sebastian Picur, who is popular on social media. – I have baptism, communion, confirmation. I stopped going to religion classes only when I was in technical school because of an unpleasant catechist. Can’t I get married in a church? – one of the viewers asked the priest. To answer the question, the priest recorded a short video. He informed there that:
In such a situation, the priest may suggest (require) supplementation of material related to catechesis.
The recording sparked a heated discussion. According to many people, it is rarely checked whether future newlyweds attended religion classes at school. “Since when does a priest check your marriage certificate?”, “You can get married without any problems. Nobody checks your high school certificate” – we can read in the comments section.
However, it turns out that this is not always the case. One of the women described her friend’s experience. – My friend had this. The free course was to last a total of 24 hours. She went for a paid one, which lasted 3 hours. For comparison, religion classes in high school last about 340 hours – she wrote under Father Picur’s video.
Father Sebastian Picur about his activity in social media
Father Sebastian Picur is one of the most popular Polish priests on social media. His TikTok account is now followed by over 764,000 people. As he emphasizes, such activities are a great way to reach people who are not associated with the church. – The bishop gives me the green light for this type of evangelization. He knows that he is very needed today. Social media is a tool for reaching people who are not usually in church. Due to the pandemic, people whose faith was not lively and deep no longer regularly attend church – he revealed in an interview with Aleteia.org.
