Although PiS’s rule ended in December last year, many things still work as they did. Nothing has changed so far regarding the availability of abortion – or rather its unavailability, as Poland currently has one of the most restrictive laws in Europe. Women can count on help only when the pregnancy threatens their life and health or when it is the result of a prohibited act. It is true that several bills have been submitted to the Sejm that would change this state of affairs and facilitate and legalize access to abortion.
Unfortunately, Marshal Szymon Hołownia stood in the way. Promising during the election campaign to eliminate the so-called “parliamentary freezer”, applied it to all abortion-related projects. . The reason is simple – the upcoming local government elections. The topic was also discussed in “Contact Glass” on TVN.
An opponent of the legalization of abortion contacted “Contact Glass”.
It started innocently, with the assurance that the caller was a fan of TVN and the program. But then Mr. Tomasz from Tarnów got down to business. First, he recalled the fine imposed on TVN by the National Broadcasting Council for a documentary about John Paul II’s cover-up of pedophilia, and later he asked for reliability:
Yesterday and today there was a lot about abortion in your materials. You also responded to the fine imposed by the National Broadcasting Council by saying that you will always tell the truth and show it, regardless of whether it is convenient or not. I appreciate it personally.
As a regular viewer who considers you to be reliable and independent journalists, I am asking you to also show the voices and comments of such outstanding authorities – I am sure you will agree – like Professor Adam Strzembosz, whose opinions and constitutional issues are based on such difficult topics as abortion. and you often invoke the law.
Then he quoted verbatim a professor who criticized attempts to make it easier for Polish women to have abortions, claiming that they were “highly immoral”:
The recently submitted draft bill on conscious parenthood is, in my opinion, highly immoral, contrary to scientific knowledge and human rights. From the point of view of biology, the only moment that can be talked about as the creation of human life is the moment of conception – such a beginning of life is a scientific fact, not resulting from worldview or religious faith – concluded the viewer.
he did not leave the viewer’s appeal without comment.
You wanted it to be this way – and it was. Because you quoted these opinions and they were not manipulated in any way. They weren’t cut either because they went to the ether – he assured the viewer.
What do research say about the availability of abortion?
The viewer did not quote the earlier statement of Professor Strzembosz, who in an interview for KAI cited anecdotal arguments for the harmfulness of abortion:
When it comes to remorse, I know people who even received absolution and did penance, but being over 60 years old they cannot help but shed tears when they remember the moment of deciding to terminate the pregnancy – said the professor, considering it an argument about the “immorality” of the procedure .
At the same time, the professor does not claim that smoking should be banned because some people dying of lung cancer regret having smoked cigarettes. Meanwhile, according to research, the vast majority of women do not regret the decision to have an abortion. These conclusions include, among others: from a large study in the United States, conducted by scientists from the University of California in San Francisco. 95 percent women said in 2015 that abortion was the right decision. A 2008 study by the American Psychological Association proves that women who had an abortion in the first trimester had lower levels of depression and anxiety compared to women who were denied abortion. Among the conclusions from , which examines the fate of women who had abortions and were refused abortions, we find one that Professor Strzembosz might also know:
The situation of women who were refused abortions deteriorated economically six months after giving birth. These women were at greater risk of poverty. This threat extended for the next four years. Their employment level was decreasing and they needed help from state institutions much more often. Women who were denied abortions were much more likely to struggle with economic hardship and uncertainty that lasted for years. Laws that deprive women of their reproductive rights undermine their economic opportunities.
