Many directors decide to release special, often limited, director’s cuts after the film premieres in cinemas. They are significantly longer than the cinema ones, contain additional scenes, extended dialogues, and sometimes are included in the “extras” of the film. This group undoubtedly includes , who, for example, produced over 100 hours (!) of material for “The Lord of the Rings”. The director’s cut of his interpretation of Tolkien’s trilogy is “only” 12 hours of them, the rest of the shots still appear on the Internet from time to time, even 20 years after the premiere.
On the other side, in complete opposition to this approach, there is – to the despair of fans – . As he himself says, he kills parts of his films without mercy.
Denis Villeneuve will never show the director’s cut of his films
Both parts “”, “Blade Runner 2049”, “Sicario”, “Labyrinth”… All Denis Villeneuve’s recent films (except “A New Beginning”) last well over two hours. Villeneuve likes long productions, and although he has many hours of materials at his disposal before editing, in the editing room he turns into a monster who, with surgical precision, cuts, cuts, sews, shortens and throws away fragments that do not fit into the whole.
I believe that if it doesn’t make it into the movie, it’s dead. Sometimes I cut something out and think, “I can’t believe this is unnecessary.” I feel like a samurai has split my insides open. It’s so painful that I can’t go back to those scenes and create Frankenstein out of them, reanimate the things I killed. It’s too painful. Once something is dead, it is dead, and it is dead for a reason. But yes, my job is filled with pain. The movie wins. In the editing room I act without mercy, I don’t think about my ego, I think about the film. I’m killing my children, and it hurts, said the director in an interview with Collider.
, who were on the film set and recorded their lines. For example, scenes with Guerney Hallek playing the balliset were removed from the first part of the film. A lot of shots were cut from “Blade Runner 2049” that allowed us to better feel the world surrounding the characters – e.g. a bird’s eye view of the city.
This means that regardless of audience requests, we will never get director’s cuts of Villeneuve’s films. Fortunately, the director is not that callous. Along with his productions, products about the process of their creation hit the gadget market. On the occasion of “Dune”, special albums were created, which included more information about the set design, details from the book that are not visible at first glance in the film, and music. Of course, this is not a longer version of the film, but it is always something for the most committed fans.
