Don’t let yourself be fooled by raspberries and check when to plant them. The right moment is crucial

in gardening stores they are available in two versions: in pots and with bare roots. Those in the ground can actually be planted throughout the entire season, although it is best to do it at the most convenient times, i.e. outside winter and hot summer. In the case of raspberries with exposed roots, it is better to stick to the dates. How and when to plant raspberries, to give you whole baskets of fruit?

When to plant raspberries? The best moment has come

Raspberries bear fruit in two periods: summer and autumn. Summer varieties bear fruit from June to August, and the shoots bear fruit only once, which means that they need to be pruned after harvesting. The fruit is usually larger and sweeter. Autumn varieties begin to bear fruit in late summer, from August until October or the first frost. The fruits are slightly smaller, but with a more intense flavor.

Raspberries, regardless of variety, best planted when they are dormant. This will help the seedlings take off better. The best time is the beginning of spring, i.e. March and April. This is when it is worth planting varieties that bear fruit in summer. The soil is still cool, but warm enough for the roots to develop and strengthen before summer arrives. You will also avoid problems with drought.

Raspberries, especially autumn varieties, can also be planted in late autumn, just after the first frost. i.e. usually at the turn of October and November. If conditions are favorable, you can transfer the seedlings to the ground even in late November, but the condition is that the soil is not frozen. they must take root well before winter.

It is a good idea to thoroughly dig the soil in the place where you intend to plant raspberries in autumn, clean it of weeds and fertilize it with manure. It should be slightly sour. A dry, clayey and wet place will be bad for the bushes. It should be slightly shaded (but with access to the sun) and sheltered from the wind, e.g. close to a fence or near trees.

How to plant raspberries? There should be bushes placed in holes approximately every 50 cm, which will provide adequate space for growth and a convenient amount of light. You will also need stakes or scaffolding on which the raspberry shoots can climb. Before planting, inspect the roots, remove any damaged ones with signs of disease, and cut the shoots to a length of approx. 30-50 cm. (prune harder in autumn than in spring so that the roots grow faster). You do not need to prune smaller seedlings. Before placing them in the substrate, you can soak the seedlings in rainwater for a few hours.
