“Too Big for Fairy Tales 2” – read an excerpt from the book:

The May weekend was fast approaching, and my mother and I had no specific plans. It was quite strange, because we always traveled somewhere during this period. However, I wasn’t going to remind her that she could somehow manage the coming days. The idea of sitting at the computer from morning to evening did not seem scary to me at all. This was my idea of how to spend my free time. So I remained silent, hoping to continue training during the May weekend. Every day after school I turned on my computer and prepared with my team for the next tournament that was to open the May break. “Oh, taking a break from school is another victory,” I dreamed to myself. Mrówa and Staszek would sometimes visit me with laptops and we would play, sitting together in the room, so that our parents wouldn’t boomer that we had no contact with each other in real life. Of course, being in one place together didn’t change anything in our relationships or increase the satisfaction of the game and had no impact on anything at all. But at least no one complained that today’s youth “have gone completely wild because of these computers and can’t talk to each other normally.” We talked after all! Both in real life and online – always the same!

– You got it?

– You give!

– What a noob!*

– Done!

– No, no!

– And beautiful!

– Give me smoke!**

– You’re going, you’re going!

-Smash him!

– We are rotating!***

What’s abnormal about this conversation? In my opinion, absolutely nothing! We sat and played, and my mother, seeing that I was staying with the company she trusted and liked, was also more willing to leave the house alone. She only said when she left that she was going to the cinema or to the climbing wall, because it was in climbing that she discovered her new passion. I never went there with her because she was really good at the discipline described in her guide as one that “your son probably won’t like.” Me and climbing, ha ha. I had my sport to which I remained faithful. . E-sport, of course! So when my mother had time for herself, I did what I liked the most. I played with my friends, and during breaks I made and drank hectoliters of lemonade with them.

– Hey… – Mrowa said to me during one of such breaks and to this day I consider her short comment as the beginning of my new adventure, which I could probably call the adventure of a lifetime. – And you, old man, don’t you wonder what your mother is up to with all this climbing?

– But what? – I asked a bit stupidly, because how could I do otherwise, since I was completely stupid because of this stupid question?

– Well, she really liked this wall. And you know, when you climb, you don’t have long claws or anything… Everything gets broken, and there’s magnesium that dries out the skin on your torn hands, that sort of thing… I’m a bit surprised that you’re not surprised that she liked it so much, but this one …

– Jizas, Delfina, if you want to work in my office, you are welcome! – Staszek interjected, suddenly so enthusiastic for some reason. – You, too, could easily become a life coach!

– Life coaching, I guess – Delfina corrected and they high-fived, and I still didn’t know what they were talking about.

Staszek noticed my confusion and instead of quickly explaining everything to me, he became even more confused.

– Passion is passion and you can find it at every stage of life – he said wisely. – But your mother was affected so suddenly and very intensely…

– He flies to this wall and flies, almost every day… – Delfina didn’t help me understand.

– She was there yesterday and the day before, and she even forgot about the May weekend. She didn’t manage any trip for her beloved son, but she always did it… – Staszek added, and I was really losing patience.

– Waldek, when you fly and fly and lose your mind so much that you forget about what was customary, it can only mean… Ooo? Well, oh? Well, think, man, what does this mean… – she encouraged me to try to guess the Delfin, and I was shaking with nerves because I still didn’t understand anything.

– Delfina, he still doesn’t understand anything – Staszek rightly noticed, then rolled up his sleeves, warmly put his arm around me, sighed and explained: – I think, and my intern, life coach Delfina, agrees with me, that your mother is crazy.

– You mean she was swinging on a rope? – I tried to catch what he was even saying to me. I really tried! Mrówa and Staszek were silent for a long moment, exchanging only significant, serious glances.

– He’s in denial – Staszek finally broke the silence, and Mrówa took over the baton from him.

– YOUR MOTHER MUST HAVE FELL IN LOVE WITH SOME CLIMBERS – she explained to me in capital letters. – Because if there was no love, she wouldn’t sacrifice her colorful claws to climb the walls in the fumes of sweat and the stench of climbing shoes. Not your mom! Not such a well-groomed chic, man, come to think of it…

But I wasn’t thinking. My vision went dark, although I didn’t know why. I guess it wasn’t because this hypothesis of my friends particularly scared me. After all, I encouraged my mother to try to meet someone and go on a date. She was alone for a very long time. Maybe I just felt bad at the thought that my mom had someone but didn’t bother to tell me about it? Maybe at one point I felt less important to her? Maybe…

– Hello! – Delfina shouted in my ear, interrupting my thoughts. – Are you okay? Because you suddenly turned pale…

It took me about five minutes to come to my senses. I drank two overly sweet lemonades in a gulp… And I suggested to the team that we go back to the game.

Now Mrówa and Staszek were a bit surprised, not really understanding my reaction, but fortunately neither of them commented on it. We sat down at our laptops and started clicking. After three minutes of fighting, we lost to INSECTS. Not only was it a really bad team, but it also consisted of players we didn’t like. Malicious and constantly picking on my overweight, Staszek’s nervousness and Ant’s gender. And we lost against such idiots, of course because of me!

– Listen, calmly digest what may or may not be true. Staszek and I are just guessing what your older one is up to, right? And tomorrow we will return to training. Today, I think you need some time for yourself – Delfina summed up our failure and got ready to leave.

Staszek followed Delfina without saying a word. Once they were in the hall, I heard what he finally said. He lowered his voice because he was gossiping about me. But he didn’t turn it down enough…

“But he was shocked,” his whisper reached me.

– “He was shocked,” they say, idiot. Or “he was pretty beaten,” you could say, too, Delfina corrected him, and they left, and I was left alone, shocked or smacked, trying to imagine my mother’s new boyfriend.

If he climbs, he’s probably slim. Slim, tall and definitely has long limbs. Long and very muscular legs and arms. This is 100% a mega packer that resembles a killer spider. He’s not afraid of heights and probably not afraid of anything at all. This is a fearless killer spider. When he sets a goal, he achieves it. He must be characterized by ambition, tenacity, physical strength and strength of character. Maybe he’s a climbing coach?

If so, then I should multiply everything I guess about him by three. And I would also add feet that smell like sweaty shoes, because that’s what my mother’s bachelor probably has. How is he?! Since when has it been there?! And why is it there at all?! I stayed with these questions until the very evening, because my mother came back very late – exhausted, but satisfied. I looked at her nails. They were cut short, unpainted and slightly damaged, and the chalk from the cuticles was white, unwashed from the hands.

– What is it, honey? Why are you looking at me so strangely? – she asked at dinner and started examining her hands herself. – My manicurist would probably break down at the sight of this, but what don’t you do for passion?

“Mmm, yes,” I just mumbled and went to take a bath. On the way, I took some half-eaten toast with cheese, which I love, to the sink.

***

I couldn’t sleep at night. I tossed and turned, imagining my mom’s guy. Or for a change, nervously laughing inwardly at the well-shot film Delfina and Staszek filmed for me. Maybe there was no partner! My mother might as well just like climbing and do it with her new friends! I tried to get to the truth by guessing because I didn’t dare ask directly. “She’ll have something to talk about, she’ll be ready and she’ll want it, she’ll tell me,” I thought in the morning and tried to take a nap again, even for five minutes.

– Waldek, breakfast! – Mom’s voice rang out at the same moment, and that was all the sleep.

Exhausted, I dragged myself out of bed, brushed my teeth in twenty seconds, and sat down at the table.

– Waldek, there is something you should know. I’m ready to talk to you about it and I think I want to.

I froze. I swear I froze.

“The thing is… The point is that…” The nervous mother was just gaining momentum, but I rudely interrupted her.

– That you have a boyfriend? – I shot out and then bit my tongue because I thought that that was definitely not what my mother meant. That she probably wanted to tell me something completely different, and I, being turned on by my friends playing life coaches, said something stupid unnecessarily.

Meanwhile, my mother’s eyes widened, she took a mouthful of oatmeal, chewed it efficiently, swallowed it, looked into my eyes and…

“But you know me well,” she sighed. “His name is Piotr,” she said shortly and inhaled the rest of the oatmeal at the speed of a vacuum cleaner set to the highest suction power.

Then we were silent for a while. A really long, long time. My blood pressure disappeared and my mother finally took a deep breath. Everything would be fine if later, in one exhale, she didn’t utter probably a hundred sentences strung together! She spoke so fast, as if she forgot that there were any commas or periods, that the statement sometimes had to be paused to be understandable. I wish it was a statement at all and not gibberish!

– Piotr would like to meet you, I told him about you, he said that even though he doesn’t know you yet, he already likes you just from my stories and he said that he would be happy to take you to the mountains if you want, because mountains are his passion, or he will play your games with you if you want. will you teach him because he can’t do it? Piotr is nice, he likes animals, he works from eight in the morning to four and studies on weekends because he’s applying for a law degree. He has a younger sister and apparently nice parents. I don’t know, I haven’t met them yet, but I’ll probably meet them soon… – my mother chattered furiously. On this one exhale and without pauses! Meanwhile, I tried unsuccessfully to herd thoughts galloping in all directions onto one path. They were like a flock of crazy sheep!

– Does he climb? – I just asked, as if it made any difference. However, I didn’t know what else to do or how to interrupt my mother who was chattering incessantly. And it had to be stopped because she would soon faint from lack of oxygen.

– Yes! Climbing is his world. Would you like to try it?! – my mother shouted unnaturally, even happily.

Of course I didn’t want to. I wasn’t at all interested in some Peter’s world.
