Many famous people place their hands in unusual ways during meetings. What does uttarabodhi mudra mean?

Some famous people place their hands in a specific way when speaking in public. There are many of them, but the most popular gesture is probably the rhombus or diamond, which became the symbol of the former German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. Some see it as self-righteousness, others look towards the Far East. Where did this gesture come from and what does it have to do with uttarabodhi mudra?

Photos of Angela Merkel holding her hands in a rhombus or diamond shape can be found literally in every corner of the Internet. Bent elbows, hands at stomach level and fingers together: thumbs up, thumbs pointing down. Over the years, many people have wondered where this gesture of the German politician came from. It turns out that although the “Merkel rhombus” is mainly associated with her, she is not the only one who uses it. We can also observe it in other politicians, e.g. Donald Trump or Turkish President Recep Erdogan (visit our gallery).

Where did the famous “Merkel rhombus” come from?

The “Merkel rhombus”, also known as the diamond, is actually a symbol of the German politician. Many people wonder where the idea for this hand positioning came from. Merkel herself was asked about this, and she admitted quite casually:

There was always this question of what to do with your hands. It worked out that way for me. There is a certain symmetry in this arrangement

– we read in .

However, not everyone believes in such a simple explanation that “it worked out somehow” and sees a deeper meaning in this gesture. Especially since it also concerns other important politicians. What is so special about “Merkel’s rhombus”? According to some, such a gesture expresses a sense of power, others believe that it is performed by thoughtful people who consider themselves the wisest in the company. Perhaps such a hypothesis is related to a certain concept that comes from Buddhism – although its meaning has been flattened, suggesting that Merkel and other people are “wise guys” and “important people”.

The inspiration for the creation of “Merkel’s rhombus” was Uttarabodhi mudra?

“Merkel’s rhombus” may be related to uttarabodhi mudra. According to beliefs from the Far East, this is the mudra of enlightenment. Yogis all over the world use this gesture every day. It is especially useful before any speeches, difficult tasks we have to perform or other stressful situations. It clears the mind, allows you to calm down your emotions and, therefore, make better decisions. They have a relaxing effect, combat fear and anxiety, and thus increase self-confidence.

Was it uttarabodhi mudra that helped Angela Merkel successfully hold the position of German chancellor for 16 years? Or maybe she just considers herself an “important person”? The interpretation will certainly depend on political views. However, we will not dive that deep.
