Do you put shells in the same basket as eggs? Well, you’ll be surprised where they should go

Eggs are one of the basic food products in our homes. We eat them for breakfast, use them for cakes and dinners. The problem begins when you have to throw away the shells. Which bin should they go into?

Segregation has been mandatory in Poland for several years. Some waste does not cause us any problem and we immediately know which container it should be thrown into. Unfortunately, there are also products that we have to think carefully about. Egg shells are a perfect example. Did you know they can’t go into the same container you put rotten eggs in?

Where to throw away eggs? There are two containers to consider

Even if we try not to waste food, we sometimes throw something into the trash. Most often, it is stale bread, expired meats and rotten vegetables. Eggs may also end up in the trash, especially if they are spoiled. When shopping, it is difficult to check each piece of egg carton, so when you return home you may find that you need to get rid of some of the eggs. Egg is an animal product, so it should be thrown into the mixed waste container. It is black in color. The situation is different when it comes to shells. They should go into the brown bio-waste container. Under no circumstances should you throw shells down the sink or toilet. It’s a short path to failure.

What is bio-waste? What don’t we put in our bio?

Bio-waste is a product that undergoes biodegradation, i.e. a natural decomposition process. They are created in our homes from food or plant remains. Egg shells can be used as ecological flower fertilizer or thrown into the trash. The brown container should also include products such as:

  • Peels,
  • food leftovers,
  • Coffee and tea grounds,
  • Spoiled fruit and vegetable products,
  • old bread,
  • Sawdust and tree bark,
  • Mown grass,
  • Leaves and flowers.

Into the bio-waste container cannot be thrown in bones, feces, ash, earth, stones, impregnated wood and medicines. Remember that for not sorting or incorrectly sorting waste, you can get a fine of up to PLN 5,000.
