Let us recall that on October 10, 2019, just before the parliamentary elections, a propaganda “reportage” entitled “Invasion”, which presented the LGBT+ community in a manipulated way. He insinuated, among other things, that non-heteronormative people are also pedophiles. Moreover, the station broadcast it just before the Polish national team’s match, which meant that it was seen by much more people than usual.
It is worth noting that at that time, in connection with the broadcast of “Invasion”, no institutions authorized to punish the broadcaster reacted. At that time, Telewizja Polska was sued by activists and the Campaign Against Homophobia for infringement of personal rights, which was confirmed by the District Court in Warsaw in June 2022. TVP then filed an appeal against the judgment to the Court of Appeal, but the new authorities of public television withdrew it and decided to implement the judgment of the court of first instance and apologize for broadcasting the film.
On the old TVP, homophobia was commonplace. The new authorities are against hate speech
Therefore, the ruling of the District Court remains in force, which obliges TVP to provide over PLN 35,000 in compensation to social organizations working for LGBT people in Poland, including: Trans-Fuzja Foundation, Lambda Szczecin, Province of Equality and the Campaign Against Homophobia. Moreover, Telewizja Polska was obliged to broadcast an apology with the indicated content in the main edition of the news service. The portal’s editors decided to ask the broadcaster what he plans to do.
The current authorities of TVP SA in liquidation have carried out a detailed analysis of cases concerning the protection of personal rights and found that some of them are unjustified. Decision to withdraw the appeal regarding the film entitled ‘Invasion’, the content of which was homophobic and discriminatory, was launched at the end of January this year. The recognition of the judgment confirms the lack of consent of the Company’s authorities to hate speech in the public media, which should take special care of the objectivity and reliability of the presented content. The apology will be published on TVP and in the form of a letter to the plaintiffs after the judgment becomes final, the TVP Information Center reported.
Let us recall that after the change of government, Telewizja Polska issued an apology to LGBT+ people for the words that had been uttered on public television in recent years. In mid-February, Wojciech Szeląg’s guests on TVP Info were LGBT+ activists Maja Heban and Bart Staszewski. The presenter then decided to issue an apology,
– LGBT+ people are not an ideology, but people, specific names, faces, loved ones and friends. All these people should hear the word ‘sorry’ somewhere. This is where I apologize, admitted Wojciech Szeląg in a breaking voice.
