More expensive cinema tickets are not a myth. We are returning to pre-pandemic attendance

There is more and more talk about possible ticket price increases in Polish cinemas. There are many indications that such a scenario will actually come true.

The pandemic has left its mark on the entertainment industry, which, as a result of the lockdown, completely stopped functioning for several weeks. The fear of getting sick, restrictions and the increase in interest in streaming platforms negatively affected the attendance results of the big screen. According to Mariusz Spisz, president of the management board of Multikino Media, this trend is slowly being reversed, although the condition of Polish cinemas has not yet returned to its pre-pandemic state.

Box Office lab data shows that in 2023, Polish cinemas were visited by 50.1 million viewers. “During the presentation of the 2023 cinema schedule, we said that we expect that 50 million viewers will come to cinemas in Poland in 2023. Today we know that this result has been achieved! This is already over 80% of the record result of 2019, when cinemas in Poland were visited by 61 million viewers,” the president of the management board of Multikino Media told Wirtualne Media.

Ticket prices may go up

Mariusz Spisz also commented on the widely commented issue of increasing ticket prices in Polish cinemas. In his opinion, such a scenario is possible due to increasing costs, including electricity costs. “It is no secret that cinemas are affected by a significant increase in costs – mainly media and labor costs. At the same time, viewers expect better experiences from cinemas, an even higher standard of projection – and this, of course, also requires financial outlays. That is why I think that we can this year expect ticket prices to increase, which, I emphasize, have been at a stable level in recent years.

The president of the Helios cinema chain recently spoke similarly about ticket price increases: “Ticket prices in cinemas have not kept up with the increase in costs and inflation. I would not be surprised at all if operators raised prices this year. I believe there is room for it,” he said Tomasz Jagiełło in an interview with Wirtualne Media.
