The director of “Poor Things” is waiting for an avalanche of Oscars. He already has a new, eccentric design, he will take on a classic

Yorgos Lanthimos broke the bank in this year’s Oscar nominations, the film “Poor Creatures” has a chance for 11 statuettes. However, the director is not sitting idle waiting for awards. The creator is already working on another unusual project, which will be as eccentric as his previous productions.

Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the most interesting contemporary directors who smuggles important social commentary into his unconventional productions. The Greek’s first famous film was “Fang” from 2009, which destroyed the image of family reproduced in pop culture. After the premiere of “Lobster”, about a world where the condition for survival is mating, Lanthimos was recognized by the Academy. The film with Collin Farrell received an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

Lanthimos is waiting for the Oscars and is working on his next project

In 2017, the director filmed his own version of the Greek tragedy in the form of “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”. The cast of the film about an unsolvable dilemma included Farrell again, along with Nicole Kidman and Barry Keoghan. A year later, “The Favorite” was released – still one of Lanthimos’ most accessible films. The production received ten Oscar nominations – including best director, best picture, best supporting actress, original screenplay, set design and costumes. The award for best leading actress at the gala went to Olivia Colman, and for the director it was also the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with Emma Stone.

The actress also played the main role in Lanthimos’ latest hit, “Poor Creatures”. It is an adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel about an eccentric doctor who, thanks to science, overcomes death and brings the body of a young woman back to life. Lanthimos’s film interpretation of the irrational story met with great approval from reviewers. The general admiration for the production is also reflected in the Oscar nominations – the work has a chance to win as many as 11 statuettes. The nominations also included the most important ones – for the best film, director and screenplay – this time adapted.

Lanthimos will direct the South Korean fantasy comedy. Emma Stone is in negotiations for the role

However, Lanthimos is not resting on its laurels and is not waiting for an avalanche of awards on its hands. As reported by Variety, the Greek director will soon shoot a remake of the South Korean film “Save the Green Planet”. This is again quite an eccentric project, as befits the director. The dark fantasy comedy debuted in 2003 and tells the story of a mentally unstable hero who kidnaps a businessman because he believes that this will help him stop an alien invasion. It is a cult item in many circles of fans of the genre.

Filming for the new installment is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024 in the UK and New York. Work on the film may take up to several years. Perhaps we will see Emma Stone again in the cast of Lanthimos’ next work. The actress is negotiating a contract for a supporting role in the film.
