Mikulski “had to beg for roles.” All because of the series “Higher than life at stake”

Stanis³aw Mikulski is one of the most outstanding actors of his generation. His artistic achievements include over a hundred productions, both on the small and big screen, but it was the cult “Stawka greater than life” that brought him the greatest popularity. The role that ultimately brought his career to the top was also his curse. Why?

is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors in the history of Polish cinematography. Although he passed the external examination in 1953, three years earlier he made his debut on stage, and later in the film “First Start”, which began his fruitful career.

He played Hans Kloss in “Higher Than Life at Stake”. The role changed the course of his career

He received his first important role on the big screen in the war drama “Kanał” directed by A, in which he played the role of Smukły. Then he appeared in many great cinema and television productions. The most popular ones include: “Ewa Wants to Sleep”, “The President’s Visit”, “Meeting with a Spy” and “Ashes”. The breakthrough in his career came only in 1965, when he played the role of Hans Kloss in a television play (available on ) by Andrzej Konic and Janusz Morgenstern. However, he was not the first choice of the directors, who initially planned to give the role to Andrzej May. However, he was not particularly interested in it, and in response to the telegram with an invitation to test photos: “Thank you, I won’t take advantage of it.”

The premiere of the show was an incredible success and exceeded the creators’ wildest expectations. The unflagging viewership and interest in the production led to the decision to create a continuation in the form of a series with the same title, which was broadcast in October 1968. Mikulski once again played the role of the famous agent J-23, gaining even greater sympathy and recognition from viewers. Although his popularity rapidly skyrocketed, it did not translate into new professional offers. Why?

After the premiere of “Stawka”, Mikulski received a bad name. He fought for years to rebuild his position

Mikulski repeatedly complained that after the premiere, directors began to identify him with the character he created in the hit series. This overshadowed his earlier achievements, causing him to be pigeonholed. He only received episodes, and those in uniforms at that, which didn’t particularly satisfy him. – I went to directors, begged, and nothing – he recalled years ago in . – They kept explaining to me that I was born Kloss and that viewers would be reluctant to see me in other incarnations, for years – he recalled.

He finally stopped trying to get rid of the unwanted patch. Then he focused on performing in theaters, as well as hosting television programs such as “Wheel of Fortune” and “Supercops”. Only in 1971 did he return to the screens, receiving the main role in the series adaptation of Zbigniew Nienacki’s novel, in which he could present a slightly different side of himself. However, this was not the peak of his abilities and the fulfillment of his acting dreams. – They asked me to play Mr. Car, another positive “Uncle Good Advice” type character. This was not the role I wanted, he said, not hiding his resentment.
