For many people, baked beans are the taste of childhood. It might seem that the combination of beans, tomatoes and aromatic sausage cannot be improved. Nothing could be further from the truth. Just two additions are enough to turn baked beans into Hungarian beans that are even better than goulash. The recipe is very simple.

Baked beans don’t have much in common with French or Brittany beans. It is a traditional Polish dish consisting of beans, tomatoes, onion and sausage, sometimes combined with smoked bacon. Quick and easy to prepare, for many it is an example of comfort food, i.e. food that evokes pleasant memories. If you love baked beans, try Hungarian beans.

How to make traditional baked beans? These ingredients cannot be missing

The thing about traditional and frequently prepared dishes is that they can simply get boring. Some people use it to freshen up the dish. Sometimes even a small change and a few additions can change the dinner. Baked beans are prepared from white beans, usually of the peasant type, good quality sausage, onion and tomatoes, usually tomato paste or passata. Some people also add smoked bacon, which gives the dish an amazing aroma. What should I change? Try it and you won’t regret it.

In this case, just add chopped fresh pepper to the traditional beans. The effect will exceed all your expectations. You will also need spices and additives. What? First of all, Hungarian paprika paste, sold in a characteristic tube or jar, which is an essential ingredient of traditional Hungarian goulashes. You can choose mild or spicy flavor. Spices such as sweet ground paprika and smoked paprika are additions that you cannot forget about in this dish. If you like spicy flavor, also add chili pepper. It is also worth adding savory to the pot, which will give a meaty flavor, as well as oregano and black cumin.

Hungarian beans – ingredients needed:

  • 250 g beautiful white beans,
  • 300 g raw or steamed smoked bacon,
  • 200 g of tomato paste,
  • 1 red pepper and 1 yellow pepper,
  • 1 large onion,
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic,
  • 1 teaspoon of ground sweet pepper,
  • half a teaspoon of smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of Hungarian pepper paste,
  • 1 bay leaf,
  • 1/3 chili pepper (optional),
  • salt and pepper to taste.

Preparation:

  1. Soak the beans overnight in water. Drain, rinse and put into the pot. Cover with fresh water and cook until soft (approx. 60-90 minutes).
  2. Cut the onion into cubes or slices and fry it in a deep frying pan or in a large pot with a thick bottom.
  3. Add diced bacon. Fry.
  4. Cut the pepper into cubes. Add to the pan.
  5. Cut the garlic into slices and add to the pan. Add all the spices, tomato paste and a little broth or water if everything is too thick. Add the beans and cook everything for about 10 minutes. Finally, season with salt and pepper.
