The 74th edition of the Berlinale began on February 16. The Berlin International Film Festival was inaugurated with the screening of “Small Things Like These” by Tim Mielants, starring Cillian Murphy. It’s an adaptation of the book “Little Things Like These” by Claire Keegan. The story tells about a small Irish town, making viewers aware of what was happening behind the walls of the local monastery in the 1980s. This is where the so-called Asylums for fallen women.

The film tells the story of music journalist Ruth and her father who live in New York. It is difficult for a woman to come to terms with her family’s traumatic history. Her father managed to survive the Holocaust, but then quickly emigrated overseas. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, there is an opportunity to travel to Poland. “For the first time in their lives, father and daughter are really getting closer to each other. The New Yorkers’ journey through post-socialist Poland is strong proof that confronting the painful past does not have to be painful,” reads the production’s announcement.
Berlinale 2024. Kamila Urzędowska with international distinction
Kamila Urzędowska will repeat the success of Bartosz Bieleni (“Kos”, “Corpus Christi”) at the Berlinale. The actress played Jagna in the painting adaptation “”, which conquered cinemas in 2023. The 30-year-old will join the prestigious group of Shooting Stars winners. The distinction is a special award that aims to promote young, talented European actors. Previously, the title was received by, among others, Rachel Weisz (“The Favourite”, “The Constant Gardener”), Melanie Laurent (“Inglourious Basterds”, “The Illusion”) and the film’s James Bond and detective Benoit Blanc from “Knives Out” – Daniel Craig.
