In 2023, a total of 17,235 cultural events were scheduled in the Basque Autonomous Community, which represents an increase of 6% compared to the previous year. Mainly musical performances (5,569) and theatrical performances (4,562) were offered, of which 27% and 47%, respectively, were in Basque. In all cultural disciplines, the number of performances increased compared to 2022, except in bertsolaritza and theater; verse sessions fell by 9% and theatrical shows fell by 2.8%.

These are some of the main conclusions drawn from the report ‘Analysis of the cultural programming of the CAE. Year 2023’ published today by the Basque Observatory of Culture, based on the digital agenda of the Kulturklik portal. The document compiles information (language, territory and discipline) on the cultural events that took place last year.

The most numerous events were concerts, mostly contemporary music. Basque was the language most present in musical performances (27%) and Bizkaia was the territory where the most concerts were programmed.

As for theater, a total of 4,562 performances were scheduled in 2023, more than half in Bizkaia (50.4%). Regarding language, 44.1% of the functions were represented in Spanish and 41.2% in Basque. 43% of the performances were aimed at children and family audiences.

As for the rest of the disciplines, 845 dance performances were offered (8.3% more), 1233 exhibitions (7.3% more) and 1065 verse sessions (9% less).
