How and when to sow grass in spring? Do it using the “cross” method. It will grow lush and even

When should you sow the grass in spring so that it grows lush, thick and green? The right date is the key to success, so it’s better not to miss it. Although there is still some time left, it is worth purchasing seeds and starting the first preparations now.

A perfectly even, green and well-kept lawn is the pride of every gardener and a showcase of the house. That’s why it’s so important to take proper care of it. However, before we get down to it, the first step should be to sow grass. When is the best time to do this?

When to sow grass in spring 2024? It’s better to wait than to rush

Sowing grass is the first and most important step to having a thick, green carpet in front of your house. That’s why it’s so important to make it better. Therefore, do it only in late spring, preferably no earlier than mid-April to June. The risk of frost, which could ruin the entire work, is then negligible and the humidity and temperature are adequate. Choose a clear, windless and warm day when the forecast does not predict any rainfall in the near future.

How to sow grass step by step? Start by preparing the soil

Don’t forget to get the right seed mix. Match them to the conditions in the garden (type of soil, sunlight, shading), and how the lawn will be used. Other varieties will be suitable only for beautiful appearance, while others will be resistant to trampling. The next step to having a beautiful lawn is preparation of the substrate. Dig the soil to a spade depth and remove all dirt and stones. This is also a good time to set up a mole net. Soil pH is also important, as grass grows best between 5.5 and 6.5 pH, so it’s worth paying attention to it. You can acidify it with peat or lime it with fertilizer chalk.

What’s the best way to sow grass? Use a simple method

After preparing the ground, all we have to do is properly sow seeds. Scatter the seeds evenly over the entire surface. Do it in such a way that there are no places left where they will not be, because in the future they will turn into bald spots. The cross method works best, i.e. scattering in two directions. Finally, water the seeds, but do not overdo the amount so as not to wash them out. Repeat this treatment every day. Carry out the first mowing only when the blades exceed 10 cm in height.
