20,000 species of bees, directed by Estibaliz Urresola, is the most nominated film for the 38th edition of the Goya Awards. It is up for a total of 15 awards, among others, those reserved for best film, novel direction, original screenplay, supporting actor (Martxelo Rubio), supporting actress (Ane Gabarain and Itziar Lezkano) and best leading actress (Patricia López Arnaiz ).

Despite this, the most visible face of the film, the young Basaurian actress Sofia Otero (9 years old), will not compete in any category of the Spanish Film Academy awards, as it is essential requirement to qualify for a Goya is to be over 16 years old as of December 31 of the year of production of the film.

Otero will therefore not be able to revalidate the award for best lead performance, the Silver Bear, won last February at the Berlinale, since she is not nominated either in the best lead actress section or in the best new actress section.

The Film Academy renewed its statutes in 2011, and introduced the exclusion from the race for the awards for people under 16 years of age, understanding that “the media power of winning a Goya can make them subject to pressure and obligations that may affect its development”.

Before that decision by the Academy, the Navarrese actor Andoni Erburu was, in 1998, the winner of the Goya Award for Best New Actor at the age of 10 for his work in the film Secretos del corazón, by Montxo Armendariz. He is the youngest actor ever awarded in these awards.

After winning the Silver Bear for best performance in Berlin, Otero will therefore not be able to take the baton of other Basque actresses awarded at the Goya, either in the category of best new actress (Jone Laspiur in 2021 by Anne and María Cerezuela in 2022 by Maixabel); best supporting actress (Marta Etura in 2010 for Cell 211); as in the best leading actress (Patricia López Arnaiz in 2021 for Anne).

In the male section, Saturnino García (1995, for Justino, an elderly murderer), Andoni Erburu (1998, Secrets of the heart), Eneko Sagardoy (2018, Handia) and Telmo Irureta (2023, Spring consecration); for best supporting actor Karra Elejalde (2011, for Also the rain and 2015 by Eight Basque surnames) and Urko Olazabal (2022, Maixabel); and best leading actor Alfredo Landa (1987 by The animated forest and 1993 by The pig).
