Choosing a name for a child is not easy for many people. For others, it is not a problem at all. They immediately know what they want to name them. The difficulty arises when it is an “obscene” name. In such a case, the official may say “no”.

Polish law is quite liberal when it comes to choosing a name for a child. However, certain conditions must be met. “There is no formalized list of names that can be given to a child, but the law provides for certain restrictions in this respect: no more than 2 names; the name cannot be ridiculing or obscene; it cannot be a diminutive name,” we read on . However, the second point is a controversial issue, as not everyone has similar thoughts about what is decent and what is not.

Some parents found themselves in such a situation and wanted to name their son with a rather unusual name today – Lucifer. The official refused to enter such a name in the birth certificate, citing the negative opinion issued in 1996 by experts from the Polish Language Council. Since the comment was outdated, the parents decided to contact this institution for an updated opinion.

I am convinced that educated people will not find the name Lucifer obscene. […] As parents, we realize that the name Lucifer may cause tears, fear or resentment among some elderly women in the countryside. Despite everything, we want our son to be an advocate of enlightenment and the fight against superstition and falsehood

Lawyer: “The head of the registry office should refuse”

The Council member’s answer was not satisfactory to the parents. He found that this name “is strongly laden with diabolical connotations, and as such cannot be recommended as an official name given to a citizen of the Republic of Poland. It can be assumed with great probability that a citizen named by such a name will be perceived through the prism of such a name, and that this perception will be rather related to negative evaluation. Indecent means something that violates the prevailing moral norms or is inconsistent with the prevailing moral norms. […] Although Lucifer comes from Latin. Lucifer, meaning “light-bearer” and “morning star”, i.e. “Venus-Dawn”, is a name not associated with light, a star or a planet, but is clearly assigned to a fallen angel, the prince of darkness, Satan. […] Therefore, the head of the registry office should refuse to accept the declaration about the choice of the name Lucifer.

Both lawyers and experts from the Polish Language Council suggested rejecting such a request. However, it is worth knowing that their suggestions are helpful in making difficult decisions, but they are not binding. The employee of the Civil Registry Office has the final say as to whether a given name can be given to the child or not.
