A mural from Ondarroa, among the three best in the world in 2023

The mural “Ode to the Basque matriarchy” painted in Ondarroa (Bizkaia) by the Canarian artist Maias Mata has been selected as the best in the world in the social impact categorywithin an international competition organized by the Street Art Cities platform.
The mayor of Ondarroa, Urtza Alkorta, explained that the work reflects the “strong presence of women” in this coastal town, where, while the sailors go out to work, they are the ones who support “the family, the house and the town itself”.
The uniqueness of this town is also expressed through the red, white and green colors used in the award-winning creation.
The mural by this creator, known by his artistic name of Sabotaje al Montaje, has been carried out inside a initiative promoted by the City Councilwhich aims to create an “open-air museum” in this town, with works drawn on facades.
To this end, the first mayor has pointed out that the City Council Every year it sponsors the stay of two artists in the municipality -at least one of them, a woman-, who during their visit to the town come into contact with groups and neighbors to learn about their idiosyncrasies.
The mayor explained that the residents are “happy” with this initiative, because they see that, “a street where hardly any people used to go,” now receives visitors.
In addition to the work distinguished as the best in the world, another painting carried out in the streets of Ondarroa, a portrait of the Flemish artist Djoels, has also been chosen among the fifty best murals in the world in 2023.
In the 2022 awards, the work “Rederas”, created in Ondarroa by Murales Lian, within the same municipal program, came in third place among the 100 best graffiti in the world.
In addition, two works by the Pasaita artist Nexgraff competed to be the best in the world: “Granddaughter and grandmother in a garden” painted in Ibarra” and another mural, without title, painted in the Gaztetxe Zizpa in Baiona.
