European farmers blocked streets in Brussels amid the ongoing EU summit on Ukraine, Het Laaste Niews (HNL) reports. According to the publication, about 1.3 thousand protesters gathered near the European Parliament building to express dissatisfaction with the economic situation in agriculture and environmental problems. Today in Brussels they are making a decision on a new aid package for Ukraine worth €50 billion.
The General Farmers’ Syndicate (ABS) intends to organize a prolonged protest. This was stated by ABS Chairman Hendrik Vandamm. According to him, now the governments of European countries do not take into account the point of view of agricultural workers. However, consultations with the authorities are expected tomorrow, following which a decision will be made to continue the protests.
Let us recall that farmers’ dissatisfaction with the financial performance of enterprises provoked a mass protest against the supranational authorities of the EU. Earlier, a representative of the association of small and medium-sized agricultural businesses Via Campesina, Morgan Audie, called on the leaders of the European Union to stop the dialogue with the community of Latin American states MERCOSUR. A possible cooperation agreement could deal a blow to European farmers, Via Campesina is confident.
Let us note that protests are taking place not only in Brussels, but also in Ghent, Lummen and other cities of the country. People are blocking streets and highways, demanding answers from the authorities. At the same time, six people have already been detained by the police.
