The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao will host the work of the Navarrese artist June Crespo from March 1 to June 9. “Vascular” is an ambitious exhibition dedicated to the work of the creator, one of the most relevant emerging figures in the European art scene today, as explained by the Bilbao art gallery in a press release.
The exhibition will bring together a selection of recent works, as well as a large-scale sculpture group conceived specifically for one of the Museum’s exhibition spaces. Both at a spatial and conceptual level, this presentation is considered a turning point in Crespo’s exhibition history to date.
Crespo establishes a transformative dialogue with the concepts that have marked Basque art in recent decades, but also addresses radically contemporary issues such as feminist sensitivity and awareness of the crisis caused by the industrialized world on natural ecosystems.
The creator often integrates recognizable parts of containers or construction structures, such as drums, cement formwork or iron held by straps, to which are added in “Vascular” stems and parts of resized flowers and plants, arranged in groups of intense dynamism.
Along with a selection of recent works, the exhibition is structured around a new production that gives the exhibition its title, in which recurring aspects converge in many of Crespo’s series, such as the sculptural or architectural use of photographic images, or the presentation of industrial production supports. Both support the proliferation of vegetal, tubular and cylindrical shapes in space.
