Pruning lavender is an extremely important procedure that ensures that the plant blooms profusely and retains its shape. Moreover, it prevents the wood from becoming woody and rejuvenates it, so it should be done regularly, twice a season. Otherwise, the plant may wither and lose its unique appearance, especially in the middle, where a “bald nest” will remain, i.e. a place without stems and, in the season, without flowers. When should it be trimmed?
How to prune lavender after winter? Do this in one case
If you haven’t trimmed your hair in the fall, you will have to undergo the first treatment of this type soon, in early spring. More specifically, we are talking about the period from mid-March to early April. On a warm and sunny day, trim the plant’s small, young shoots that have not yet become woody. Apply the 1:3 rule, i.e shorten them by approximately 1/3 of their length. Just be careful not to damage the wooden twigs below the leaves, as this may cause them to bloom much less during the season. Always leave some fresh leaves on them. Apart from cutting young shoots also remove stems damaged during winter — do it regardless of whether you carried out autumn pruning or not.
When and how to prune lavender? There are three deadlines, but only do it twice
Another cut should take place in summer, from July to September, i.e. during the period when purple flowers appear on lavender. It only involves regularly removing faded inflorescences and stems without leaves. This is to make the plant bloom even more intensively. During this procedure, try to form a ball. The last date for pruning is autumn. Carry them out if you didn’t do it in the spring. In mid-September, prune all young and green shoots, leaving the woody ones intact. Thanks to this, it will bloom exceptionally beautifully next season.
