According to the website, the new water and sewage tariffs that have recently come into force in many cities have brought significant increases that we will feel or are already feeling in our wallets. For example, in Poznań, the price of a cubic meter of water increased from PLN 5.08 to PLN 5.82, and sewage from PLN 7.68 to PLN 9.01, while in other cities the increases reached up to 63%. However, it is worth knowing that exceptionally high bills are not always the fault of the increases themselves. What to do when you have a large underpayment on your bills?
How to save water every day? Start with small steps
There may be several reasons for high consumption bills and it is worth looking at them one by one. Even though pay rises have become a fact, it doesn’t mean you have to feel them so painfully. First of all, analyze your daily habits. It often happens that seemingly ordinary activities turn out to be the most problematic. The speech includes: not to turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
- Instead of taking a hot bath every day, take a quick, lukewarm shower.
- Reuse “used” water, e.g. for watering flowers,
- Instead of washing dishes by hand, use the dishwasher or at least turn off the water while scrubbing with a sponge, turning it on only for rinsing.
- Collect rainwater and use it for gardening.
You can make a lot of such small changes. While they won’t make a significant difference to your daily life, you will notice the difference in your bills.
How to reduce water consumption at home? Check appliances, pipes and water meter
The next step should be to check home appliances, especially the dishwasher (use them only when full) and the toilet. Perhaps the cistern is broken and is constantly leaking or is set to the highest water consumption? If you can afford to buy new ones, choose those with an eco mode. Tight taps, elbows and pipes that may leak are also important. Review them and remove any defects. Install an aerator in the taps and a flow limiter in the shower head. In addition, take a closer look at the water meter, which may also have failed. We usually don’t look at it often, so it’s worth changing it. Monitor your water consumption regularly for some time. If you notice any irregularities, report them to the cooperative. Finally, review your bill. Perhaps there was an error, e.g. the water meter values were written down incorrectly. However, remember that reasonable water consumption is important not only because of the costs involved, but also because of the environment.
