Tomasz Kammel had to change his name. All because of the official. “He committed suicide”

Although Tomasz Kammel started his career in the media over a quarter of a century ago, some viewers certainly remember that his name sounded slightly different then than it does now. What is the reason for the change and why did he decide to make it? There is an interesting family story behind it.

Tomasz Kammel is one of the most popular Polish artists. He started by hosting a program on Muzyczny Radio FM in Jelenia Góra, and after moving to the capital, he became involved with Radio Wawa. In 1997, he began fruitful cooperation with , on which he hosted many different programs, including: “Blind Date”, “Family Secrets”, “Coffee or Tea” and “Teleexpress”. In recent years, he has regularly appeared on screen as one of the hosts.

He never used to be called that. Tomasz Kammel corrected the name

The older generation of viewers, who still remember Kammel’s beginnings in , probably knows that initially there was only one letter “m” in his surname. Many of them wondered whether he made this correction just for the sake of being in show business, or whether there was a deeper story behind it. It turns out it’s the latter. Some time ago, the presenter published an entry on Instagram in which he decided to dispel any doubts. He explained that thanks to his paternal grandparents, he had German roots and their name was Kammel.

My father’s mother, grandmother Gienia, was the daughter of a Polish mother and a German father, her husband, and my grandfather Eduard, is German. Their name was Kammel. However, when they returned to their grandmother’s hometown after the war (…) the official arbitrarily shortened their surname and entered Kamel in Polish documents

– he explained. When the journalist’s father’s relatives decided to return to Germany, their surname was ex officio enriched with an additional letter, because this was how it was recorded in the birth certificates of their ancestors. Although his parents, unlike other family members, did not decide to make this change, retaining the form “Kamel”, he decided to return to the proper spelling in order, as he admitted with a laugh, “to no longer pretend that he is not a camel”.

The journalist’s name has an interesting history. It comes from this word

However, this is not the only interesting fact about the journalist’s name. By the way, he also decided to tell a little about its origins, because this topic also aroused a lot of interest among his fans. As it turns out, it has an equally interesting history and meaning.

It is an old Swabian (Swabian region) surname derived from the name of the textile profession

– he explained. It turns out that in the southern part of Germany, where his relatives came from, the word “die kammels” was used to describe people who dealt with combing wool, probably using special tools such as a card for this purpose. The journalist’s surname most likely comes from the German word “kamm”, literally meaning comb.
